Thread regarding CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield layoffs

How is the company really doing?

Was anyone else confused by the positive tone from the CEO call on Friday? I feel like the last few months, all I have been hearing is 1) how bad things are financially, 2) how bad we are doing in government programs, and 3) how we aren't on target to achieve our corporate goals. It has created a lot of stress for me and my department. So I was really surprised they talked so much about everything we have accomplished and all the progress we have made this year. And the board was in agreement.

I get it if the ELT was trying to encourage us a little bit but it just seemed the like the opposite message from the last 6 months. I just want to know how is the company really doing?

Let's have a history lesson. When the State of Maryland pushed through legislation in a matter of hours and took control of the Board of Directors. The BSBC Association removed our logo BECAUSE they saw that as the State of Maryland having control of the company and the logo and that goes against the Association's Charter to allow any state of have control of a licensee. Which DID shut us down from paying a claim, accepting a premium payment, answering a call for 24 - 48 hours. Somethings that are common place today are a direct result of the events that happened; i.e.: the FEP Ops center is its own legal entity. So in the words of George Santayana: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it!" So when a tenured employee says we are repeating history... trust them, they know what they are talking about.

CareFirst has never been shut down or put on hold. I don't know why you think that. Yes, the State of MD forced a Board of Director structure for the company, but it didn't ever stop the business.

This ELT will repeat the mistakes of the past, letting it get so bad the State of Maryland will step in again and put new restrictions on how CF operates. This is what happened back in 2003 when CF tried to allow WellPoint to buy them out.

Spot on, and this is what happens when the company makes it untenable for anyone with more than a few years' of experience to want to stay.

I can assure you ELT & majority of “leadership” aren’t genuinely trying to “encourage” us. They’re only loyal to themselves & their pockets. ELT isn’t aware that the company has been shut down & put on hold for similar performance before. We can get put on hold again. They better wake up.

As Chet used to say, “Stick to the knitting”. One key problem is the company is trying to do too much in too many directions with stretched resources. ELT must take a firm look at staying on course with core business needs. It is great and altruistic to give to the community, but don’t forget we have an operation to run and are not a charity or foundation.

With the ELT of the month club active and alive due to tenured and qualified leadership departing, stability in corporate operations is limited at best. HR is abysmal in its ability to recruit and execute that potential hires leave midway through the hiring process. Procurement operations is so convoluted and drawn out that it routinely impacts delivery of initiatives as project health and causes associates to spend an inordinate amount of time shepherding and prodding even the most routine of purchases through the cycle.

Bottom line, the company is trying to do too much and forgot to stick to the knitting. Govt programs, typically a rock solid division is also trying to do too much. It is in trouble with DC Medicaid and the normally reliable Operations Center is being led down a dark path by dubious leadership failing to execute on simple business competencies.

Getting the back office operations straightened out would go a long way it righting the ship and after that becomes stable, focus can be moved to strategic visions. Right now, operational and tactical dimensions are broken and in immediate need of repair.

I really appreciated when Chet would provide detailed information about how the organization was performing. He provided this during his quarterly Leadership meeting which was then posted for the entire organization to see. Yes, we did get a briefing a few weeks ago but I think this should be core communication once a month or quarter. I just think I see my AIP disappearing into thin air and THAT is bothersome. I can think of several things we can do to stop bleeding money and it frustrates me that ELT cannot see that.
