Put on PIP outside of cycle

Heads up that off cycle PIPs do happen at Exxon. I was put on one this week outside the usual review window after generally positive feedback. Posting so others are not caught off guard. Document everything and ask for clear expectations.

You know what else happens. Hipos get mid cycle pay raises. Yep. You get nothing this year while hipos are getting mid year raises routinely as normal business! Enjoy eating your cake peasants.

Remember, a big part of your evaluation and feedback will be on how you made people feel in your interactions with them. The basis of the interaction has no bearing as perception is reality so if you are perceived in a certain manner and that perception is communicated to your manager and they have a reason to use that perception, that will be your reality. So smile when you talk.

@e2 it is apart of the process it’s just not heavily advertised. Anyone can be placed on an off cycle PIP regardless of service years, age, previous ranking etc. (if the performance warrants it and HR signs off in agreement….thats it)

I’m sure he was a stellar employee with no history of buffoonery or safety violations? Certainly not part of a protected class. To be fair, the person I was referencing was, so no way was HR touching that with a ten foot pole.

I stand by what I said. It’s practically impossible to fire an MPT out of cycle unless they’ve done something incredibly bad.

No offense, but happened in my reservoir engineering group one year to an engineer with less than 5 yrs. Came in one day and he was gone, admin packed up the office. You don’t know what you think you know - no offense,

I have seen HR not allow us to put young engineers who have committed multiple life saving rule violations on an outside of cycle PIP. I know we’re all here to hate on the company, but if this is true there’s probably a massive hole in your story. No offense.

This usually happens to those who, EM feels, are under performing and yet to reach 5 years with the company. That way they save vesting 100% of what was matvhed in the 401k plan for that employee. Can happen to anyone outside the PADP or PIP process.

Sorry dude or dudette, off cycle PIPs are rare, and as you already know deep down- not used to improve your performance. They are now managing you out. Start interviewing elsewhere immediately.

Never heard of this, and that’s outside our process. What is your age and years with EM? Sometimes there are special rules for particular categories.

You are done. I was fired during the pip because they were watching everything i did. I overheard them saying I was given enough rope to hang myself. HR was in on it too. Watch out for the constant requests for you to quit or take the pil. I am currently working for a smaller company and enjoying the non toxic workplace. Exxon su-ked and I hated every moment.

Was there any trigger/catalyst? This is highly unusual.

@OP Start doing all of your communications in writing if you haven’t already, especially with HR.

Protect yourself at all times.

If they put you on an off cycle, they want you to go badly because they usually hold onto you to meet the PIP target in assessment. Sorry to hear but definitely a signal to look for a new job.

Documenting everything won’t save you. Just start looking for your new job.
