Attrition raises opportunities for those who stay?

Promotions will be for who remains, because they don't hire people from outside anymore, they are giving also senior management roles to external consultant just to avoid hiring at all... Sure, a lot of people are leaving but this fact rise opportunities for who have a shell hard enough to resist the storm. Aig has a profitability problem, we either will survive or perish

I get your point, but disagree. The voting is pretty much in line with my experience at AIG.

About half of the people, the good ones, are actively trying to leave. The other half are mostly losers who have no ambition or self confidence or are people that have been there so long that they are making too much money or have it too easy to leave.

So the voting is consistent with this. The half that aren’t trying to leave are in denial which is fine if you are a gambling type.

Whoever is staying now to get promoted is truly a loser…if you’re staying, just remember you’re

  1. going to be known by everyone else in the industry as a “loser” (no one that isn’t PZ or the ELT is staying because they’ve realized the bonuses will never be ‘that’ good even if you’re a top performer). It’s now public knowledge that the salaries / bonuses at AIG aren’t market leading (at all), so if you’re staying it can only be assumed you’re happy with your situation being a cog in the wheel.
  1. everyone in the industry knows that 95% of the talent was at AIG (across all levels) is gone, so if you’re still there, maybe you’re one of the 5%, but as someone hiring I’d probably assume you’re the other 95%, and after bonus time in February that number will probably be closer to 99%
  1. regarding the original post - there are a multitude of examples of companies under duress where people get “field promotions” as a product of attrition, and guess what, wherever you go after, no one is going to say “wow you were a senior manager at 28?” Instead they will say “oh you were a ‘senior manager’ at AIG at 28, I can assume how that happened…especially with no consistent history of constant promotions”

But hey it’s your life and best of luck with your ‘promotion’, “senior manager”…I’m sure it will come with a HUGE (read: 10%) salary increase and about 3x more work…that’s how their expense reduction model works, and you’re playing right into it…
