Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Pressure to return to the office?!

As the title suggests. Has anyone's manager or person above them suggested they return to the office, becoming essentially a hybrid role.

It seems like in more and more of my conversations with leadership there is a narrative to try and steer employees back to the office. Its frustrating, but until work your way forces that I don't ever see myself returning. If it becomes mandatory I'll most likely leave.

WYW has simply been a disaster at 3M. People admit that they sleep part of their work day away. Others admit playing games on their home computer and get up every 30 minutes or so to work on PowerPoint or email for 15 minutes then back to the goofing off.

The only way to save this place is to have all fully back in the office. Maybe allow Friday at home. Productivity has been garbage here since covid, which is why the stock price is putrid.

Sorry but we boomers are tired of carrying the lazy young ones while they fa-t around at home. Back to the office before it's too late.

The demise of WYW is imminent. Mike is on his way out soon, probably this year. Monish is moving over to HC company. The board is going to hire someone from GE. Why would they have hired Monish if they didn't love how GE does things.

The new person from GE owes employees nothing and owes the board big time.

WYW is not consistent with GE ways. The new leader isn't going to let the inmates run the asylum, letting people sleep at home during the middle of the workday.

A good 10k will walk without a severance, which is what the new GE person wants anyway. And the rest will grudgingly come back to 3M Center and places gritting their teeth but knowing once the job market hits the cr----r they are stuck here.

Get over it already. We had two plus easy years working from home and taking naps whenever we liked. You heard it here first.

These so-called "subtle hints" are just complaints coming from particular leaders who wish things were different but who have no actual insight into company plans. These are the same leaders who have no idea what the strategy of this company is, you think that somehow magically the COC managed to tell these leaders about some secret plan to reduce wyw (while continuing to hire remotely in other states/countries)? Take off the tin foil hat.

I am much more efficient when working from home. Walk by chatters no longer exist and I do not have to worry about getting sick from those who refuse to stay home. Finally I do not “miss” seeing anyone. I am there for a paycheck not social hour.

If the so-called “Work Your Way” is eliminated, deprive Mike Roman and his gang of VP thugs with one thing they cannot control - - labor. Ignore their direction and make them go through the elongated termination process or leave with no notice.

The way the bosses are dropping the hints is by having plants in the audience. One team of about 20 has one real bu-t kisser who, when it's time for open questions, he asks about hybrid and then mentions that other teams that have implemented this have loved seeing each other in person Tuesday to Thursday and how morale is much better. The boss then, of course, pulls out the good Ole team player phrase about people will step up when (not if!) Hybrid is implemented (imposed).

I agree that this won't happen until winter is over in Minnesota, say April 1st is the end of WFH and hybrid is implemented. Of course, all "team players" will go along willingly and only those anti social types will resist. Expect extreme peer pressure.

Those high levels LVS should visit the plants to understand the real problem with COGS. Instead of working remotely to receive reports. @Tireman pls take note.

I agree with above. Those regional directors are demanding Plants to reduce COGS, while they are remote controlling from home. How is that fair?

I think the regional folks should work in office. Imagine those VPs and Directors working at the comfort of their home, and generating PPT reports. How is their life such good?

I agree with the post regarding gas reimbursement when coming into the office is required. The office is no longer where I work, so mileage reimbursement applies.

I had multiple managers who used to sit in their office in all day with the door shut (one is in building 235, other was 224), and then periodically make a lap around the cube farm to see if people were at their desks. They would promptly return to their office and shut the door. Is that the 3M culture this individual was referring to?

In regards to the previous post “In a past EO townhall one guy asked from Peter about WFH. His question was when he looks around he only see empty chairs around him at the office and that is not 3M culture.”

That individual is from the Sourcing department and his definition of a productive day in the office is playing solitaire in his office, wandering around with coffee cup in his hand and asking his workers pointless questions. He is almost an exact copy of the annoying boss from the movie Office Space. There should be no surprise that all of the people around him would rather work from home than see him wandering about doing nothing of value.

Agree with this comment “The older they are, the more they think people in the seats makes them more productive”. In a past EO townhall one guy asked from Peter about WFH. His question was when he looks around he only see empty chairs around him at the office and that is not 3M culture. Instead of asking others to come, people need to think why most of non production workers chose to WFH. 3M was going downhill way before WFH. Forcing people back will only make things worse.

Personally I would like to see a worldwide walkout. One demand… get rid of the lice infecting the head of the entire firm. You know who they are.

Other companies have tried to force employees to come to the office and the employees quit, then they rescind the policy. The older they are, the more they think people in the seats makes them more productive. If the job is getting done from home or an outhouse, why do you care?

Remember, 3M has many more layoffs to happen. Very strategic on their part as they are hoping there will be many that will decide to find another job. They have already done the calculations snd have an estimate of the fallout. Thus when/if it happens, it is just part of the headcount reduction plan. Plus- there are no packages needed, just clean attrition.

Sorry for all those stuck in the plants. Spent many years there and with the countless phone calls and call ins while being salaried meant I was doing on call for free. Plus people were expected to be in by 7 and leave after 5. It was fun work overall and great people. But I'd say if WYW is sabotaged as appears to be the case, time to look for another job in 3M where you can at least work from home Monday and Friday. Maybe you can join the team tearing down A3M. That clustereff is going to need good people to return 3M to the previous system that wasn't great but was not broken

Definitely getting this vibe in TTS. Look at the leaders….if they are coming in all the time, the expectation is the same. They do/Model what they expect.

If 3M asks me to return to the office, I will. But I will let them know that due to this change, my carbon footprint will be increasing and I am not okay with that. WYW has been such a godsend for my personal carbon footprint and I am so thankful to lead by example to continue reducing that carbon footprint. To the guy working 50 hours a week in the plant, a su---r is born every minute, you could die this weekend and 3M higher ups would shed a tear of happiness that they reduced headcount in your plant with no severance. The work world is changing, 3M center has no respect for those in the plants, but you don't see it.

My dog throws up when I am gone too long, say over 4 hours. Will 3M reimburse me when I get the carpet cleaned? Landlord does not know about the dog and the carpet will get stained with pu-e.

Your attitude is precisely why people are “quiet quitting” as they know more layoffs are coming. Why should I care when I’ll be laid off anyhow? I’ll take the severance and coast out the door. Meanwhile, do as little as possible and get paid to do it. I’m not going out of my way for 3M or any other company. Corporations are evil.

For those that threaten to leave if "Work Your Way" is reduced, please do so. You will not be missed, and are more than welcome to go elsewhere and will be less of a burden on the bottom line. 3M is a Material science company, we make products, make a lot of stuff, not sit on your behind and complain company. This Company is laying off thousands of people, and someone post this "tone deaf" non-sense here.

Why should I burn my gas driving to an office when I can accomplish the same amount of work from home? If I have to come in, I want a reimbursement for gas and for my mileage. It should not come out of my pocket.

Can’t disagree with doing less and getting paid for it. You get nothing for doing more. I’m here for the Benjamin’s and nothing else.

To the person who claims "they will be the most UNproductive days of the week"...what are you doing when you're working from home if that's what you'd do at work? This question comes from someone who doesn't get the WYW option. Someone who is in the plant 50 hours a week. Someone who's "fetched" copies off the copier for the people "Working From Home" to give to someone for them. Someone who's had to set up hybrid Tier meetings just so the WYW people can "sometimes" dial in. It's your type of entitlement mindset that is tanking the company. Not the people asking you to work for what you're paid for.

If I have to go to an office Tue-Thu, they will be the most UNproductive days of the entire week. A long breakfast, followed by an early 2-hour lunch, then bailing 90 minutes ahead of time. In between all of that I’ll be watching ESPN on my phone and or catching a nap. It’s a good life. 🛏😔😴💤🥱

Plenty of subtle hints have been dropped around here, especially near the end of team meetings. WYW is another 3M fad that will be laid waste like A3M, black belts, EX, etc. You will be expected to be at work Tuesday thru Thursday. If you resist, first you get a poor performance ranking, followed by an improvement plan, followed by last chance warning. You will be called not a team player when your termination is imminent.

Managers have been telling the gang that other companies are doing the Tues to Thurs hybrid. It's the "sweet spot" and "best practice" and employees at those companies are grateful to get to work from homes on Mon and Fri.

Expect big change once the spring thaw happens in Minnesota
