Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Wish 3M would ask for voluntary departures

I know so may people that would take a package if you could raise your hand to get out. Wish 3M would ask of volunteers.

I think volontary plan is less probably and we are very near to the next step with involuntary plan... houps you missed your mission and you are not capable anymore.... Because now they need money and quick with less negotiation.

Maybe with today's pfas announcement, the company will offer early retirement packages for places like cottage grove. A lot of people would jump at the chance to leave now.

Good point on how 3M wants a steady stream of voluntary attrition. Much cheaper that way than paying people to leave. Other than HC biz there hasn't been a single biz growing this entire century with organic growth. It's all been acquisitions including the fatal blow from aearo ear plugs. With no growth and constantly rising costs, the only "solution" is cutting heads.

This company is like a penal colony that is running out of food and wants people to leave the island on makeshift rafts so that the guards (3M "leaders") have enough to eat. Starvation mode is how to describe what has happened. I blame this mess on the "culture change" and quarterly earnings madness brought here by none other the James McNerney from GE. Monish and all the GE hirelings along with the tire guy have turned 3M in devils Island. Good luck to all the escapees.

I thought about this as when never there was going to be larger layoffs, 3M usually offered an incentives for volunteers. Kind of provided a win/win for 3M and the employees who were close to retirement or who were wanting to leave. This assumes that after the cuts, 3M was stable- was not planning on additional significant reductions. Takes a long time to retrain an employee that you will need to replace.

What is different this time is there is a continuous need to reduce their workforce. So by not asking for volunteers or offering incentives for those close to retiring to retire, they have a future flow of attrition - which is what they are wanting/needing. So why pay for something you want to happen.

That was my deduction of why 3M would not ask for volunteers. I could be wrong, but it was the only thing that made sense to me.

Left on my own terms with a package over a year ago. If your leader is reasonable and that leader has respect of HR, this can happen.

Problem is some leaders want to play God and decide, like Death in the seventh seal movie, who lives and who dies. A warped sense of power indeed. We can thank mcnerney from 20 years ago who lived off of psychological fear and created the dystopian 3M of today.

Ps. So glad to have escaped the madness and having to tell good workers that they were a 2 and that is a good rating even though it meant below average. Thanks Jim.

Already did in 2019, employees who in pension plan can leave voluntarily and take some advantage. Mass retirement for senior level technical employees at that time. Right after the voluntary retirement, lay-off was coming.

Roman and Consigliere Patolawala should resign immediately. They are unfit to work at 3M.

I know of many colleagues who are near age 55 and wished they could volunteer. They know that those remaining in the organization will have to pick up the work from whoever left the company.
