3M corporate strategy

Are we keeping the corporate strategy group of MBAs? All the folks on the line, in the field, in the lab, etc, have to lose their job but all the coddled mba graduates that have accomplished nothing get to stay on qnd get their butts pampered so they can roll into a 14 level job with 3 yrs of real experience. Easy group to lay off!!

Advanced 3M is a complete failure. Added many layers of fat while not achieving its objectives. I heard many plants organizaiton was impacted by this poor judgement by the very senior leadership team

Implying that leadership actually values and has a winning strategy. If they did why so many pivots, added layers of non-value added roles and expenses that do not add to the bottom line of the P&L. Combine this with expenditures on consultants and nepotism layers of management and you can see the failures to grow and improve are coming from the COC. The worst part is the doubling down on the same failed policies and renaming of the same plans on repeat. Burn the plan and the playbook and start over.

This statement suggests that good leadership involves constantly seeking improvement and evolution, and eventually paving the way for new leaders to take over and continue the process. The leader's ultimate goal is to create a self-sustaining system, rather than relying on their personal involvement for success.

Chavez is the chief strategy officer. Except that the only strategies are imported from McKinsey (A3M), Kearney (tiremans hirelings), and Starbucks.

If love her quote on the 3M website about "leadership" being "supporting constant iteration until you make yourself obsolete."

What does that mean? Keep changing until you get fired? Maybe that's why Mike and her are using the Einstein theory of insanity and does the same things over and over again expecting a different result. They wouldn't want to become obsolete.

Looking at the leadership of this company with more than 15 years at 3M. We have Zoe, Hammes, Vale, Roman, and Chavez. The rest of flops and rejects from GE and Starbucks and other places like monish and tireman. The competition must have hired away any good leaders from here!

Advance 3M was a McKinsey creation. So yes, Mike and Monish are paying for a corporate strategy group and consultants.

What is the roles and responsibility of the CHIEF STRATEGY OFFICER?

How will the performance be assessed for her? How did she get the job by the way?

I had one of these people help us on a project once and it took longer to train them than it wouldve taken to just do it ourselves. And their work was very superficial and not of much use. Meh.

  1. If it takes a person an extra 5 years to get an MBA, they either went very, very part time, or to put it delicately, are not the brightest. A full-time MBA is usually completed in 2 years or less, like many masters-level degrees. Part-timers typically get it done in about 3 years and change.
  1. In my personal experiences working with the 3M corporate strategy group, I have to say they are not the best and brightest. Eager and aggressive, for sure. But also terribly shallow in their knowledge and not very curious. All they seemed to want to do was make a pretty book/presentation/pamphlet to list on their resume and move on to their next thing. The first time I worked with them the complete lack of substance in their output was utterly shocking.

In terms of smarts, I'd put two or three new PhDs from corporate lab against the whole group of them any day of the week in terms of output and value.

In terms of hard work, almost every factory crew I've seen in the company puts in far more honest effort.

Salty much? What you saying is you are OK with you being laid off as long as MBAs also gone. Mike would love this kind of divided employees. What next you are better than PhD 3Mers?

in this day and age , an extra four or five years in college getting a MBA doesn't mean $hit. But because of those golden years while studying, most of them numpties think they are bettered qualified than folks who for several reasons could not get a degree through no fault of their own, unfortunately like i have found , it will stick with you the whole path of life, yes i did several courses on my own but funding was never available form work, going into my forties now and i feel i have to move away from this sinking feeling, a move to canada would suit
