Layoffs occurred in February 2021 during Concho acquisition and subsequent L48 restructuring.
In the frenzy to cut people, they “accidentally“ hacked away too many and realized some job functions were no longer possible. At least a few were graciously invited back in some capacity. Some even accepted.
Lots of layoffs during COVID and the winter storm of 2021. Some of my favorite people were just gone when we returned. The Great Reset has allowed the elimination of opposing viewpoints in the company. Our collective history has been wiped clean and replaced. What was, is no more.
Redundant employees were a sizable chunk of those let go, but so too were people that managers just didn’t like very much. Ask around. There were some departures that defy logic until the personal stuff is factored in.
I have the same question as the OP. When I was hired a few months ago, I was told the majority of the layoffs COP had were redundancies caused by the Concho/Shell deals.
That is feasible but also the kind of thing I would probably say if I was hiding the truth in a job interview.
Can anyone explain if that actually true?

Well, since Conoco hasn't existed since 2003 when they were taken over by Phillips Petr. Co., I would say no, they did not lay anyone off during Covid.
Covid is still going on and there was a massive layoff in 2021, so…YEAH.
If you mean during the shutdown hysteria, then the answer is: some employees without a medical exemption were informed directly by HR and senior level leadership that if they didn’t show up in the office, in person, that it would be taken as an indication that they were voluntarily resigning and would be let go.
And at least some of those people did contract Covid but could never prove it was from direct contact with other employees.
So the reality is that employees were forced to chose between their jobs or theirs and their family’s health.
