Thread regarding VMware layoffs

401k question

If I make my 401k pre-tax contribution quickly say by march/april 2023 and then I get laid off later lets say in May 2023, will I still get full vmware contribution ?

VMware's official Q&A forum said that they won't pay your catch-up contributions after the acquisition, so I would pace your contributions like the others said here so that you can take advantage of your next company's match while you still have some left to contribute for 2023.

Max you can contribute is 6%. Pretty sure that is based on bi-weekly payments. They most surely won’t allow you to front load 6% of your total salary - they aren’t even allowing the full 1k wellness upfront now… that is 100% because of upcoming layoffs.

"A larger value to max out is your HSA."

This a thousand times. HSA is the trick many rich people use to stay rich. HSA should be maxed out every year. Did you know that at 65 you can use your HSA for anything, not just medical expenses? HSA is basically a tax free savings account.

If you max out your 401k here and get laid off, then get a new job, you’ll miss out on being able to contribute and receive match at the new employer. However, if you don’t think you will work more this calendar year then it does benefit you to max out 401k contribution, regardless of company match. Additional Real benefits is lowering the taxes you pay because you maxed out.

Another option when I between jobs is a Roth IRA where you can contribute ~$6,500 per year so long as you earn less than $300k.

A larger value to max out is your HSA. This health savings is beneficial for anytime medical need and reduces taxes.
