I have been desperately looking for a job for several months now. However, many people have left since the announcement. I wonder how everything would look if the market was not as dismal as it is unfortunately? I think that in that case Broadcom would not have anyone left to cut after the acquisition gets finalized.

Now imagine you wait for severance and have a competition of 100s or 1000s of VMware employees. Or ex employees that is.
are you separately living or the job is the only reason you are living?
We just got out of the holiday season, so cut yourself some slack. However, do enter your job campaign with a plan, have a prospect list of companies your interested in, leverage your network of friends and family. I sense a little "woe is me"? You need to shake that BS, be confident, and always have your happy face handy. Lastly, don't under estimate the ability to cut. If History represents the best prediction for future behavior then there are case studies for CA and Symantec with those details.
No doubt this first half of the year will be tough. The market needs to absorb all the layoffs going on in big tech.
But surprisingly (!} engineers are finding home pretty quickly in 2-3 months if you read the surveys!
Good thing is the aquísition will not be completed until summer then you have severance to round out most of the remaining of the year.
Stay positive and don't dispair. Keep plugging away!
Main qualification to get a job seems to be a H1b
I know tech folks who have been looking for MONTHS!
You can get a job doing stuff for $15/hr anytime but I am not seeing a whole lot of jobs that will replace a $200K/year salary + perks.
The market is difficult. I believe things will open up in 2-3 months. Tech is making room for its next big thing. Capabilities aligning to that will create success for job seekers.
