We knew Rice Lake was closing a few months back when the owner posted a bunch of the business equipment including the truck with the name on the side on Facebook Marketplace but a bunch of reality-deniers claimed it couldn't possibly be true.
Sears at 2800 College Drive, Rice Lake, is a month into its store closing liquidation sale with manager Alex Vanheuklom guessing it will continue for another month.
The Rice Lake store, which has been at its location next to Goodwill since 2003, is among 125 stores nationwide to close. The local manager said some stores decided not to do a liquidation sale, so those that are doing them, including the local one, are getting inventory from other locations.
Vanheuklom encourages those looking for good deals on household items to stop by — sooner rather than later — as he has not been given a closing date.
He also said even when the brick and mortar stores are closed, customers can still go to Sears.com to purchase products online. He said once that happens the retailer will have gone full circle — having started out with catalog only sales, then opening brick and mortar stores, and now going to online only sales.
The manager said the local closing will mean a job loss for four on the sales staff. The manager added that retail jobs are plentiful so he expects to find another one soon after the doors to Sears close for good.
Sears has had a longtime presence in Rice Lake, having had two locations on north Main Street and one on south Main Street across from the Dairy Queen.
