Are job promotions meant to be posted fairly for everyone to have a chance to advance their career. Obviously not as here in our plant in the UK, we don't seem to follow Corporate Level and therefore it seems 30 years plus of experience is no match for an Art Degree . What is happening to the world. True ,its not the first, or second, or third, or fourth, sorry you get the gist but where do you draw the line except for the day you are walking out the gates knowing you gave a lot and in return your retirement will be spent thinking how belittled you were made

The UK has been rotten for at least 10 years. The same incompetent clowns just moving from plant to plant and promoting their sycophantic buddies.
This can create a toxic work environment and make it difficult for employees to feel motivated or valued. Additionally, it creates a lack of trust between employees and management, which can further damage morale and productivity. Twenty years ago most 3M sites had Personnel Manager's that could be approachable and they were giants of a person. They understood the production employees frustration, and the people skills they had to engage with employees, it is a sad thing to say this position has be greatly missed, HR has folded to just looking after corporate admin, nothing else.It is rare for any Line Manager to waste his team on the performance of production operatives as you will not go anyway with 3M,, but it's important for them to communicate their plans and goals clearly to employees in order to build trust and maintain a positive work environment.
Up until the early 2000s, 3M promoted based on a combo of time served In Mother Mining and actual results in the job plus potential. Sure, sometimes people who were just marking time got a promotion but they usually plateued at age 50 or so. Others were truly deserving of promotion due to hard work, accomplishments, and perhaps further potential. While not a perfect system, 3M still prospered for nearly a century with this blended system.
Then, in December 2000, the dark times descended onto the 3M empire founded as a benevolent force under McKnight. The Evil Empire (GE) sent its probes into the corporate worlds in the same was as the probes sent by Darth Vader in the empire strikes back to the frozen planet Hoth (it may as well have been the frozen world known as minnesota, but hoth is definitely warmer than minnesota).
The Evil Empire searched for places to sell its corporate buffoonary and found once proud enterprises such as 3M and Home Depot too willing to buy into the BS and promises of "unlocking shareholder value" to be too strong to resist. Feebleminded boards of directors signed over the kingdoms to such villains as McNerney and Nardelli.
First, a brutal dictatorship was imposed, along with pernicious forced ranking systems, and promotions based on the premise "younger is better!" Then once the undeservedly six sigma black belts were promoted, the empire tightened its grip on the masses.
These days, the stories of a kinder, gentler 3M, focused on promotions based on merit, best in class pensions and employee benefits, etc. Are merely based on folklore.
The 3M we once knew was conquered, once and for all, by Darth Vader McNerney.

Speaking of promotions…Im aiming for a psd segment marketing role. Where else can you do nothing but make meaningless powerpoints and pull in 3 bills tc?

I’m in the same boat. MSD is full of this thanks to the KCI crooks running the show. They will promote their KCI lackies over legacy 3M candidates with more experience, tenure, skills, and track record of success. This is why 3M is what is it today. On the struggle bus.
Promotions should be based on merit and qualifications, not just on an employee's length of service or a specific degree. Factors such as job performance, skills, experience, and qualifications should be considered when making promotions. It's not fair for employees with long tenure and relevant experience to be passed over for promotions in favor of less qualified candidates. If you feel that promotions at your workplace are not being handled fairly, it's important to speak with your supervisor or human resources department to address your concerns. Additionally, you may want to look into the company's promotion policies and procedures to see if they align with industry standards and best practices.
sometimes life is not fair my friend, keep your chin up
