Midland Cost of Living Adjustment

My next role will be in Midland, Texas (moving from the Houston Campus) and I have been told there is no Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) associated with the relocation. Does this seem accurate to anyone else in a similar situation? I thought I read on this site that the COLA for Midland was 20% pre-pandemic, then moved to 0%, and then returned at 10%. Not sure if this is something that is consistently reviewed and updated or if this may have something to do with individual circumstances but just want to be sure the treatment I am receiving is equal.

Mgmt promised, in writing, the 20% premium through December 2020. They broke that written commitment during Covid. Don’t trust them for a second.

If you’re going to go to Midland, you will make 30%+ at other operators. No problem with Exxon, they have to honor their global system, but it doesn’t benefit you.

@1evs+1kFRqXrD More incentives are not coming for Permian folks. That's been a promise for more than a year now with zero action. Good time to go smh.

Currently there is a 10% Permian Premium. Beware however that the premium amount is arbitrary and can be changed at any time with no notice. To those who say Midland is cheap you are ignorant and plain wrong. Midland cost of living is consistently higher than Houston. The company health insurance options in Midland also suck. No HMO option. You will want to max out your FSA account if you have children and plan on spending even more than the FSA max. The public schools are not good. Everyone who can afford to send their kids to private school does.

The comments included student fighting, as----ts to students and staff and an increased number of physical confrontations. A mob mentality was described, including an incident that took place on Nov. 12 when an alleged fight spilled out of the school and into the streets.

The feeling, according to a teacher at Legacy, was “what happens when they figure out they outnumber us.”

A mother of a Legacy Freshman student told the board her son was as----ted in a bathroom when other Legacy Freshman students broke off a piece of a sink and heaved it over a stall door, injuring her son to the point that he missed his last football game and couldn’t take part in basketball tryouts.

You will get the 10% premium if you go. It isn’t officially a COLA as that is a 3 year payout that is specific to high cost of living places. It may be semantics, but they call the 10% a premium instead. There is also talk of more incentives coming for Permian folks, so this is a good time to go.

Living in Midland/Odessa is cheap as he-l? Why the heck would need a COLA for Midland? If you're out somewhere like Fort Stockton it's practically as cheap as Mexico.

Do not say yes to something with which you are uncomfortable, financially. Really assess your required living costs. If you take a pay cut by my moving there, say no. ….or rather, tell your boss/HR that you are very happy to move for the company when the company is willing to keep you financially ‘whole.’

Your only power to influence is now, prior to moving. And HR policies are somewhat iterative. It is only people saying ‘no’ to the package that causes HR to re-evaluate.

And saying ‘no’ to a move won’t hurt you if you do it gracefully. Remember, you are very thankful for the opportunity and very willing to help the company…..you just cannot lose money doing so.
