Thread regarding 3M layoffs

3M Plant Layoffs

From an email I saw yesterday morning, it was shared that the 3M Nevada, MO plant is eliminating 100 positions at the plant level. It was not stated if they were hourly/salary.

However, big layoff rumblings in other larger plants like Hutchinson, Minnesota - 3M's largest manufacturing site in North America. Numbers as high as 180 people in production and other areas may have their jobs eliminated. All plants were ordered to reduce spending by 8% after not hitting aggressive goals in Q4 '22.

Can anyone confirm or deny either of these site rumblings? Anyone on here from Nevada or Hutchinson?

Ignoring the TIK TOK freak out but thought I’d address the cuts to R&D shot. That area was also hit hard. Very hard in divisions. Some divisions lost 50% of their researchers and entire engineering departments.

They laying off all the temps first and shifting people with little options. Once things cooled for 3 months they have been back at it in June-August. Forcing full time employees that have been with the company 1-5 years to move to a new position and or new shift. They are doing ALL of this and are hiring new full time employees ; as well as people as temp. All posted on several sites. Not sure who or what the logic is…

Not the manner in which to treat loyal employees or get the hopes up of new hires full or temporary…

You have people on long term disabilities, that shouldn't be and you lay off these people that need this job. I know someone that is drawing long term disability in Hutchinson North plant and he is out boating, riding his Harley, and doing all other activities you shouldn't be doing if you are out on disability. That is something that needs to be looked at immediately.

People talking about using tiktok but you know if 3m thought it was a real issue they could block it. Just like they say they don’t want people using Snapchat but it’s not blocked. You can use your phone on your break in the break room. Calm down. I’m more upset at how someone said it’s cause we didn’t meet goals in -Q4 of 22. When the plant was making us take time off cause we didn’t have work. Reducing our hours and what not. We did our work. The higher ups just aren’t telling us everything.

As a long time 3mer(,15+) while I don’t wanna see anyone lose their job ,this is an opportunity to clean house. The hiring protocols within the last year or so are worst I’ve ever seen. From internal referrals to Tom , Di-k and Karen’s , son , daughter, grandchild, niece ,nephew. What happened to recruiting talented , educated people. With real experience? All that went out the window somewhere along the way. 3m has created a nepotistic cess pool. I say good riddance to this self entitlement thinking group who only have a job with 3m by riding on the backs of whom they may be related to in some capacity. These cuts will rid 3m of this group as well as many of the WYW yammers .

That was a possible explanation where the numbers we were hearing about came from. I heard that no decisions have been made as of yesterday. Will have clarity possibly tomorrow.

They need to cut 8% of total cost and spending, not 8% of employees.

The 8% number in hutch equates to about 130 people that is probably where that came from. 8% of 1500 is 120. But we’re part way through the quarter so more maybe. Yeah those numbers are the rumors likely.

Where are these random numbers generated 130, 88, 100’s , are these just rumors? Speculating? Or factual? Insider info?

FYI , Q4 2022 earnings comes out Jan 24, to close the books for 2022 , sadly expect layoffs after that in the 100’s . This is the guidance everyone is waiting on to nail down a number to make job reductions

It is certainly possible that the use of social media apps such as TikTok on company-owned devices could pose a security risk for a company, as it could potentially lead to the accidental or intentional sharing of sensitive information. It's important for companies to have clear policies in place for the use of electronic devices and social media in the workplace, and for employees to be trained on these policies to minimize the risk of breaches of company information security.
It's also possible that the company has implemented steps to mitigate the risk such as monitoring the network traffic, implementing strict access controls and conducting regular security audits.
It's also good to remind that, it's not only TikTok, but any other social media apps, the risk is not limited to just social media but also external email, messaging, etc. It's a company's responsibility to educate their employees on how to stay safe online, how to spot threats, and how to report any security incidents.
As for the layoffs, that is an internal decision that 3M management team is likely taking to meet their financial objectives and decisions may vary from plant to plant.

Rumor in Hutchinson is 120-160 very soon. We are already understaffed and the morale has never been worse. At this point I don’t know how we will be able to recover or who would want to stay.

Tireman has been making it perfectly clear during his rousing plant visits (he's been sent out as the grim reaper on behalf of Mike, who is gutless) that production costs (labor and maintenance) are way to high for his liking. Only true fixed cost, per Gibbons, is depreciation.

Either the site leader cuts head or his or her successor will.

Has cottage grove gotten whacked again this week?

The Chinese communist party (CCP) more dangerous to American business than CCCP (soviet union) ever was.

Google - dupont titanium dioxide China- and see what happened to what was a cash cow of proprietary secret technology. It's now part of chemours but that IP theft has cost the company billions in profits over the last 10 years.

If they can cut at the plants they sure as heck can put some cuts in R& D and remote only work force at 3M Center. God only knows with Engineers and Management types linking their I phones to Tik Tok, and other social media sites how many company trade secrets, intellectual property on new products have been put at risk because of fools using and wasting time on TIK TOK. Like it or not using TIK TOK on company linked devices, puts the entire company's trade secrets and new product development at substantial security risk of patent exposure, new product introductions, being stolen, and all the drawings being ripped off. Ask yourself this how does the Chinese Government already have access to and know the product specifications, for a brand new 3M product that has not even been introduced without TIK TOK likely leaked on an I Phone from a 3M'er ? They didn't log in at 3M Center. You wouldn't think so, but fools using TIK TOK on internal company networks, put all of our livelihoods at substantial risk by not following the company's electronic media resources policies or code of conduct, and training. At least majority of people at the plants are not putting 3M's intellectual property at risk unless dorking around on TIK TOK. Since phones are banned on the floor, i would bet money on Corporate remote workers being the source of the leaks. Those that use TIK TOK on 3M Network, you know who you are. You should have already been warned or gone.

The 8% cut is accurate for CBG plants. I think there were different goals for different plants depending on what business groups. Aggressive maintenance spending cuts are being talked about. Everything is on the table. Sounds like announcements will start next week but already hourly people in certain non production positions are getting put back to production.

If leaders do not meet the goals they will be replaced.

Plant folks are wondering if managers are being cut in the ivory tower. It seems inevitable but of all possible decisions the so called leaders could make they will choose poorly. Guaranteed.
