The Best are Leaving 3M

A women who I respect in her 30s is leaving 3M. As the younger smart ones are leaving I am debating leaving too. It feels like a red flag when the best of the best from the business team are giving up on 3M. We finally get good talent and then treat them poorly, I can’t blame her. Anyone else have jr level talent leaving their divisions? Thinking time to start looking too now.

The Starbucks as a model of logistics comment is so funny. We’re idolizing a company that gets 99% of their product (by mass) from the faucet. Their transportstion management is potable water pipes installed by the local municipality. Bonkers.

and why not, this year is going to see the world's most advanced AI systems make more employees redundant, STEM people are going places fast , the health spinco is the only way out for 3M now, AI is already writing it's own answers and thankfully for a few months at least gives a lot of us the chance to find a new career, if you don't believe me , get CHAT GPT to perform an update on your resume and see how impressed you will be

Unless you can somehow get onto the health care spin-off, not sure which division left has a vibrant future. Sub 2 percent organic growth for years now, some years even 0 percent gain. And what are the big "wins" to use a management fad word in the product pipeline? Couple that with significant cuts to production, both people and maintenance, makes it hard to flip around between products effectively.

Yes, more Starbucks cult will be joining. And GE plague will continue to grow. Once you have one GE boss, they will bring aboard others.

Too bad Desi didn't have an heir apparent ready to take over for him in the late 1990s. This company could still be best in class and the top company to work for in the frozen state. They would also have kept a pretty nice golf course perk for employees.

What a frigging shame. Thanks mcnerney for what you set on the road to destruction NOT.

I left after 10 years with 3M, despite great pay & benefits, an outstanding boss, glowing performance reviews, and fresh off a promotion. Wasn’t willing to endure another decade in the collapsing chaos.

The best have been leaving 3M for about 3 years now.

With current conditions, there is no way to stop the rot. 3M can hire all the new talent that they like, they will eventually leave once they come here and witness the clusterfcuk in Mother Mining.

The problem with the talent drain is that is becomes contagious. Good worker leaves, 3M leadership decides to allocate work to the rest of the team. More work, same pay, more stress, GESPP tanks. Then another person leaves and 3M amazingly decides to hire 1 to replace the 2 that left. New hire doesn't get the GREAT mentoring support like 1980s and 1990s new hires did. That person either struggles or decides to quit after a few years.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

Other than WYW, which just about every 3M competitor for talent has adopted, please tell me ONE good thing rolled out by 3M HR thus entire century. Please, not everyday wins :>)

3M was the best employer in the twin cities from the 1950s to 1990s. Sadly, that changed when mcnerney came in from GE and wanted HR to focus only on the chosen few (high potentials). The rest got drummed out by forced ranking. HR quit worrying about humans and their development but became focused on making management win. HR became MR, management resources.

The HR people from the 1980s and 1990s were truly focused on making it a better work experience for all employees. Those were some good people. I remember hearing stories when mcnerney joined how a few senior HR people went to him to explain why imposing GEs forced ranking would not be good for 3Ms culture. His words to them were more like, "implement rigid forced ranking well, or your successor will." Some of these people just decided to take a package and retire. They refused to implement something so pernicious and ruthless.

Oh, any word on the next employee feedback survey? Are we winning?

We had a woman leave too and it was because they excepted her to do multiple jobs and she did not complain due to her positive attitude but was stressed. 3M works good talent too hard and has ok talent work minimum. The problem is the incentives are not there to increase performance a few extra grand a year is not worth it for folks. The good one have no incentive to stay…

Most companies (not disney) have some form of WYW for people who do not work directly in the daily trenches in production or logistics and packaging.

3M doesn't have a competitive advantage there.

Pay raises have been Scroogian for some years now, meaning you can apply for jobs that are either same level and better pay or even a step up with better pay.

Bonuses have mostly stunk the last few years.

Morale? Can't remember it ever being worse, even during the dark days of mcnerney.

When 3M shares were consistently beating market gains, GESPP was a huge competitive advantage. Very few companies offer this for the masses and are not as generous as 3M. Since shares peaked at 250 under inge, it's been nowhere but downhill and very little potential to grow. Many people are sitting a 5 digit losses if they sold today.

Other than staying to build my pension, there is no reason to remain when you will absolutely be happier elsewhere.

With the current climate there isn't much of a draw to stick around. Stay and never get a raise or a job grade change or move on an immediately get a pay bump with a better title? Ya sure you can stay for the current 'known' but leaving for the unknown seems a bit sweeter if it comes with the perk of money and a better title.

In the last 4 months my group has lost at least 25 people, some to retirement but many are mid-career & talented people. Word is more are planning to leave. So unsettling.

the best companies are offering the best pay and conditions, 3M are not longer a good company to work for, unless you are reading a Forbes magazine with rose tinted specs on, I am staying as I only work two days inplant and three days WYW so suits me. I am financially secure and my wife works close by too so suits.

3M really blew it. It takes a lot for employees to restart in a new company, but it is obvious the work relationship has shifted. Now the proverbial pandora box is open, and people are finding better salary and intangibles elsewhere.
