Thread regarding GlobalFoundries layoffs

Should I stay or leave - I am newer employee with just 1. 2 years in GF

Appreciate these posts and helps as I really have lot of anxiety due to my immigration status as layoff will force me to look for job to stay in country.
I already see quite quitting prevalent in my department. My manager is technically very weak but personally very good and ensures he is making time to lunch with few of us as much as possible. We do not have lot of talent and experience left in our department so new people like me are taking lot of day to day tasks and trying to learn as manager alerted that we may loose the remaining experienced ones throughout this quarter.
My question is - should I start looking for job now or wait to get trained for another one year at least.
My manager has good connection with HP so he will try his best to save us if things are in his hand as he needs us badly.

Hope Mubadala can convince one of top foundries to buy part of GF at least. Hard to convince though as factories in Singapore are super cheap now due to order slow down and cheap and mature tech that no one wants to make.

@1ljy+1k8FYGA8 Excellent post!

There was a funny post on here a few weeks back that said Globalfoundries employees that leave to go work for another company are amazed at how much better it is elsewhere. It said it was like those viral videos of animals who were tortured, beaten, abused and kept in captivity their whole entire lives who then finally get released and set free. They are so astonished with their first sight of grass or feeling the wind that they are bewildered and very confused by such things at first. But then that d-mbfounded confusion turns into absolute elation at finally being free and experiencing the real world. Such is working for Globalfoundries and leaving for a more reputable semiconductor employer.

I was part of big pivot layoff due to 7 nm closure and moved to Intel. It was frankly harsh and tough time for my family as kids education was disrupted in big way. But after we settled, that was best thing that could ever happened to me. GF was my only company that I had worked in my career and I had so many terrible managers in GF that I had the image of manager as someone who just beat you to death, is a crook, politician, toxic, racist, technically zero and no human touch at all. If I was not laid off, I would have never known what it means to work with great managers who lead by example and whose mission is success of their team members. Understand GF was made from all toxic cultures who promote bad behavior in the bane of deliverable but coming out of toxic environment was so good for my health.
I worked in GF Singapore ( prev Chartered) and our biggest issue was they we always struggled to close technology gap with TSMC. Now when I see GF current situation which is trying to match margin with these foundries due to forced comparison by Wall Street, I see this as lost battle. The reason for my lost hope for GF is mainly wafer margin that comes from 7nm, 5 nm and current 4 nm. 7 nm and beyond technology is where most of top foundries are bringing margin and GF does not even have a plan for them. It is out of race in foundries race as even licensing those technologies is out of bounds for GF.
I am happy that I was lucky to be booted out from toxic culture and bad management where only Tom and his accomplices won and rest of employees loose.
GF has indeed lost his reputation in last few years and it is indeed bad now.

Globalfoundries is where careers go to die. I have heard hiring managers and recruiters won’t even look or touch anyone coming out of Globalfoundries. Previous posts are right Globalfoundries reputation is dismal within our industry. We are the laughing stock. I always find it amusing interacting with our co--y managers. Like guys who are a manager at Globalfoundries. It’s like being sharpest butterknife in the drawer.

I moved to TSMC years before pivot . I can tell you GF has Changed from respected company to laughable material due to its actions, management structure and the way talented people were recently removed or left. It was way better in GF at least when I was there.

Agree GF reputation is going south. Heard similar sentiments from this ne of my colleague in another company. It is obvious as GF recently kept loosing its reputation from second tier to bottom feeder foundry and people leaving GF due to their managers, gave true picture to outside world. GF reputation in Samsung is really poor for sure.

@kte

Ge-z, I hope you aren't the hiring manager because that's one he-l of a bad take. Just because the company leadership makes decisions with room temperature IQ, doesn't say anything about the techs/engs working there. I know a lot of techs/engs that are still in GF and any company will be lucky to take these people in- because at the minimum, we all did a lot of work despite dealing with the constant nonsensical bleating from TC, PB, HP, etc.

Early this year I left GF after only one year of employment. But I had gained over 12 years of experience prior to joining GF and only joined GF because I had lost my last job during the pandemic and was desperate for a job. Under normal circumstances my advice would be to stay for at least a year or two more to get some experience under your belt. But in this case I’d strongly advice you to leave as soon as you have secured an alternative opportunity. The primary reason is that GF on your resume does not look good. GF as a company has developed a very bad reputation in the rest of the industry. I am now working for a major customer of GF and we are seriously looking at switching our business to other foundries.

A-s licking and boot licking is special quality that comes handy when you want to survive particularly companies like GF where technical excellence is not the needed qualification to climb the ranks. It is a virtue guys so let us take it positively. I know many in GF are thriving as they have mastered licking:)

I can not do it.

So depressing and gloomy being in this weather and in GF this time. I moved from Texas to Saratoga springs and snow never looked this bad.
Wrong decisions sting. I feel frustrated, deceived as hard to stomach the lies that TC spread in lady two years since I moved here.

I will suggest to look for job as soon as market gets better as GF will continue to lay off due to its own inherent structural problem that is not in its hand now. Only thing GF can do to is to keep reducing employees to keep numbers look good to not go below IPO prize. Understand that you have immigration related things and anxiety is normal as it will keep bothering you as you see peers disappear left and right.

Stay but apply other places. Quietly. See if you get better offer. Easier to find a job with a job then without

I would stay one more year and just try to get some interesting project you can have on your resume/talk about in an interview, and then use that to find another job. Glofo is not a place where hard work is rewarded, but you can sure to use one more year to get more experience under your belt where a higher-paying company will better appreciate.

A-s lickers are rewarded in GF. Either learn it to stay or quit if you can not. Simple

One year is good enough in GF. This is not a company to build career but if you think that there is learning opportunity, you can decide to stay as long as you learn. As you mentioned, not many GF managers care for their people. Your manager is technically weak but there must be some qualities that he survived. It is not easy to survive in GF if you do not have political connection or a-s licking quality so am not surprised.

Suggest to stay as well. GF will be needing more and more newer employees to handle the affairs as experienced one being laid off, retired or volunteered. I will not suggest to stay beyond 2 years though particularly now knowing that GF will not survive long.

Will suggest to stay and learn before jumping ship as new employee like you have nothing to loose. Just ensure you stay away from quite quitting and dirty politics which is indeed a big issue in GF nowadays with more and more people getting rewarded for their a-s licking , boot licking and political connections as not much experienced talent left.

Issue is with experienced and remaining talented employees as they are deemed high cost and will be first one to go in absence of political connection se they do not have a-s licking qualities so critical to survive in GF now.
