What are the new “experiences” for future execs? With LSS now dissolved, foreign service assignments very limited, HiPo becoming less meaningful, and other “policy-backed” restrictions working against advancing talent, how is 3M going to prepare the next generation of executives? It seems like all the actions 3M is taking in the last several years are so short sighted, but I see value in the company—if we can start focusing on our people and rebalancing the short and long-term. I’ve made a choice to stick with 3M, because the grass isn’t always greener. What are the things I should/could be doing to help be a part of the solution as someone aspiring to be an exec?

@OP you can build social credit in a relatively short period of time, a year is plenty. But kudos to you if you think it can turn around, I’d certainly like to see that for the remaining stock I hold, but I don’t foresee this happening anytime soon. HCBG spin, lawsuits and disastrous SAP deployments will keep the price trading sideways at best.
Old 3M had career advancement based on whom you know (VPs, SVPs) or which big shot's job you saved by performing miracles. Everyone else just comes and does the work 9-5. New GE culture will bring the current GE method --> your manager is everything (mentor, supporter, groomer, trainer, etc)...Ask anyone about current leadership mandatory training and they will tell you the new mantra is supervisors will save the day....with so many cost cuttings/layoffs and large splits...it will be harder to see the career progression path (not that it was visible before GE culture)
For those long timers it is ok if want to stay. But for newer employees, suggest to look else where to build your career. 3M does not have a good future.
You are very fortunate to be able to make that choice to stay at 3M or to live on your own terms. I also made that choice until the company made the choice for me to be successful somewhere else. Moreover, they made this decision just in time for the holidays. Indeed, the grass is not always greener on the other side. In fact, I’m looking at having to rebuild my career after the lay off 3M executives absolutely do not care about the people at all. With that said, I love my team, management and the businesses I served. I wish everyone still there the best of luck and happiness.
(OP here) I don’t agree that there isn’t a future at 3M. I won’t deny that we are in a challenging period, some might argue a sh-t storm, but I think that opportunity lies in the ambiguity and mess. We very clearly need a leadership shake up, with an emphasis on my diversity. I’m a bit tired of seeing a table of white guys at MR’s huddles.
I’m not tied here with a pension, but I have built some social credit that I don’t want to lose. Additionally, I feel that 3M is a place where I can take personal risks to help me learn and grow—not something I could do as easily other places. I’m told my career is in my own hands at 3M, so I am taking that seriously and trying to forge a path.
No Future at 3M… need to leave to grow.
frankly i am told i am in the HiPo list for coming to 10 years, but i dont see any significant career move. HiPo program is more of a legitimate initiative to give selected employees a "stretched assignment" without actually compensating them for it. So, if you are new, dont fall for it.
The concept of HiPo was something oblivious to the 3M before GE guy James McNerney. Sure there were always people hand picked to be future leaders but it seemed secondary to worrying about the accomplishments of the 95 percent who were not HiPo.
McNerney brought in the orwellian animal farm mantra. All animals are equal but some are more equal than others. This is how Mike moved up the ladder to destroy a once great company.
Tell the HiPo to look for jobs if they don't like being treated as Hoi polloi.
