Thread regarding NetApp layoffs

Rif

Hopefully the rif will hit the no-op layers like distinguished engineers that don’t code or design, or support or test.. TDs as well, poor performing ICS .. ppl mgrs maybe, but someone has to run the asylum.. I’m none of the above ; I’m a product IC btw, and not safe either .

@iowr+1k6xxdCO,
"Believe me there is a lot of dead-wood at NetApp. Like 40% of my team never met their sprint goals, and I mean never. Estimate 14 points, deliver 3. That was very, very common."

This may be true in some ways, but I believe your conclusions don't consider the broad picture. Teams underperforming could be a result of many things. And personally I think bad engineers or "dead wood" near the top of the bottom.

Engineers could actually perform well if work was well defined and organized. Instead of having great work to do, some parts of NetApp have visionless leadership, disorganized units and constant process churn. To think none of this affects engineers ability to perform is more than a mild oversight and somewhat disingenuine. Good engineers aren't necessarily product managers or owners and vice-versa.

Company does not reward you even you tried very hard. Managers does not see your
efforts. That may be why there are dead-woods.

Hate to say it, but I think we'll see a huge RIF at the end of January next year.

I foresee big cuts coming to the cloud groups. Which is sad. They did this with a pretty viable alternative to solidfire and they'll do it again. Execs never give products enough time to fu----g breathe for sales, let alone thrive. I'm expecting the good old-timer engineers and fresh blood will be cut away. This will leave novel products in shambles for a short term win but be one of the final nails in the coffin for keeping NetApp a commodity storage company.

Enjoy your holidays but spend some time sharpening up that resume and begin sharpening up your skills. And for those of you that are spared this time, be prepared to suffer as they off-shore the rest of the meaningful work and force you to train your replacements.

As someone hired in the last year, I'm not expecting my time at NetApp to be particularly long.

To be honest most the technical leaders are just gate keepers that say no. A lot of the best ideas at NetApp come from the ICs who bust their jump to get around the the technical leaders wall of no. Unfortunately the worst thing you can be at NetApp is right because once you get above that leader and an executive goes this is a good idea there is a near 0% chance you'll get to work on it and a 0% chance you'll get any credit. But if they cut a corner and something goes wrong you'll quickly be the one to blame.

Do you really want to take out the most experienced and technical leaders in the company? The ones who are guiding the path for product features and architecture? or just keep the ones writing code?
