Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Self Harm Alert

Be mindful of affected people. My wife was notified today. We've had a lot of things going on and this was the final straw. Under close watch now.

The funny thing is how all this went done. She works late nights, weekends and rarely takes real vacations. Too dedicated TBH. She was under the mistaken impression that hard work, doing well, gaining new skills would protect her. Appears to have an inverse affect.

The story is long and it's particularly hurtful because the person who laid her off has known her for over 2 decades. Was like family, at least that's how she felt. That's rough.

She was busy today. Very busy as usual. It's a lie to say her role is going away. It isn't. Someone has to do it.

I would love to lash out and tells some hard truths, but I'll defer on that. I have some strong emotions right now and they don't need to be written out.

working hard and long hours is perfect combination to get LR , the people who work 2 hours a week for years get promoted, I was one of them, I would just attend calls while washing car or playing golf. Now I just kiss up and all is good while watching my RSUs grow and keep the facade going. Hope she does better and realizes the cruel world that is Cisco.

"Too dedicated TBH."

It's a classic situation. The employee confuses life and work and is absolutely convinced she's the best embodiment of all her company stands for and represents. Then one day the hammer strikes. New org, product line terminated, new boss thinks she's a bit too much and her world collapses. Remember this: we're all corporate mercenaries. We're hired temporarily, getting paid a given salary as long as the employer can justify that cost. It will come to an end no matter how dedicated you are. It's capitalism. Profit is the only thing that matters. Play the game, accept the rules. The ELT understands the game very, very well.

I was in your wife’s place. Was thinking about harming myself. This was back when Cisco was doing The stress is real. I survived and I’m here to tell your wife Cisco isn’t worth it. I got help thru Cisco benefits. I was surrounded with a team of doctors, therapists and dietitians. What I learned? It wasn’t Cisco. It was my boundaries and thinking Cisco was a family. It’s not and I don’t have to work 10 hrs a day. I was LRd almost one year to the day I went on stress leave. It was the best thing to happen to me emotionally. I found a new job at Cisco and am healthy and happy.

Am I anxious about Monday? Sure, I’m human. Am I going to live thru it if I’m hit? You bet I am. I hope your wife is getting help. Cisco isn’t worth any kind of self harm. You take care of your too.

Hang in there! I was laid off in 2015, when the JC / CR change happened (that “thanks John” t-shirt made a good oil change rag). I still had my badge for a couple of weeks, but my director told me not to come in (two levels of managers got laid off the same day I did).

One day, I rode my bike around Fremont, the D-mbarton Bridge, and Palo Alto, and ended up taking light rail to the concert at Levi’s Stadium, the one with Christina Aguilera and Keith urban. It was hilarious to see people at the stadium, they’d ask me how I was doing and I’d say “I got laid off” and then they would say oh… And slowly move away.

I pitied them more than me.

Being overworked currently, but making more with some decent RSUs. Everything worked out well, in the long run.

Sorry about that brother. Many of us will be in that same boat in a few days. I know this is hard to hear, but if you look around, being laid off is one of the best things that can happen to a person. Many times, you look back and are grateful that it happened.
