Reinvigorating Worker Morale: A Call for Restoring Service Dinners and Incentives at 3M
In light of 3M’s recent $2.2 billion share buyback, a move signaling confidence in long-term shareholder value, it is imperative that the company also reinvests in the very foundation of its success: the factory workers who keep operations running day after day.
For decades, service dinners, milestone recognitions, and performance-based incentives were more than just perks—they were symbols of respect, unity, and pride. These traditions fostered loyalty, boosted morale, and reminded every operator, technician, and support staff member that their contributions mattered.
Yet today, those gestures have been frozen. The absence of recognition has left many long-serving employees feeling invisible, especially as they witness corporate capital flowing toward stock repurchases while their own rewards remain stagnant.
It’s time to restore balance.
Proposed Actions:
• Reinstate Annual Service Dinners: Celebrate tenure and dedication with meaningful gatherings that honor legacy and build camaraderie.
• Introduce Tiered Incentive Bonuses: Reward consistent attendance, safety records, and production excellence with transparent, fair bonuses.
• Launch a “Legacy Spotlight” Program: Monthly features on veteran employees who’ve shaped the plant’s history, shared across internal channels.
• Offer Wellness and Travel Vouchers: Small but impactful gestures that show care for workers’ lives beyond the factory floor.
💡 Strategic Rationale:
• Retention & Morale: In a time of high absenteeism and declining engagement, recognition programs are proven to reduce turnover and improve performance.
• Brand Integrity: Aligning shareholder rewards with employee appreciation strengthens 3M’s reputation as a values-driven company.
• Cultural Healing: Restoring these traditions sends a clear message: “We see you. We value you. We’re in this together.”

free pizza in 11 days!!
It’s time for plant workers to work! No more cigarette breaks, no chewing tobacco, no 20 minute sh1t breaks. No going home for lunch, no sick break, no free turkeys on thanksgiving.
Hey Dow Jones,
Your heart is in the right place. Keep on dreaming. The only reasons these things will happen is if management decides that that is the way. Not because the Minions wish it. They do not care. They figure people keep coming here to work, why give them anything else? A sick out would get their attention, but everyone is too afraid.
Work harder and these things will come. You must try harder. Invent 10 new things this year. Find 15 new markets. It's all on you. You make the wheels turn. Get moving. Your paycheck is enough. Back to work.
Service dinners, nice dream but that is the old 3M. Service dinners are gone forever. 3M does not value employee loyalty or time at 3M. 3M values experience outside of 3M. If you are a long time 3M employee, then you are not valued by 3M.
If you are a recent hire with outside experience, you are exactly what 3M wants. Only stay 2 years and leave 3M. If you make the mistake of staying, you will be viewed as 3M loyal. There is only one thing worse than having many years at 3M and that is being over 55 years old.
I'm not so sure that share buybacks are really about management confidence. I'd rather see the money going for employee raises and re-hiring some experienced, laid-off workers. 3M has lost so much knowledge over the last few years.
would be nice to see a return to service dinners and even a pizza day or burger day........
Sadly, everything you mention AND the reasons are a complete 180 degree from how BB views workers. In his last gig, he scored 35 percent approval rating from employees. Wall Street loves the guy, as evidenced by the stock price.
BB is very predictable. He views every dollar he spends on the peons means one fewer dollar for buybacks (which raise the price of his MMM shares). Or he could increase the dividend, adding to his wealth. Or he could just give himself a bigger raise. BB is still envious of Bryan at SOLV getting double his income.
Plus BB likes to hire his pals from his previous gigs and needs the signing bonus money.
