Thread regarding Nielsen layoffs

Employment status

Question for some of the smarter folks in the crowd.

Nielsen has an automated system employees can use for employment verification, called The Work Number. My question is, is it legal for Nielsen to list a current employee’s employment status as “inactive” and to also disclose the date of termination if it is at a later date (this example: 8/29 and today’s date is 8/14). Are they legally allowed to disclose A) inaccurate information, or employment status and B) a future termination date? Google is giving varying opinions on the legality of this.

I have found that the work number is inaccurate and further validation is always required by HR. Hopefully HR has the compassion to help their employees through the process of validation; however, I doubt it.

Oh I should have mentioned, the work number is a service of Equifax. It is not a Nielsen service.

Obviously, intentionally providing inaccurate info is problematic. But mistakes can happen, and need cured in a timely manner upon notification. Providing accurate info is fine and if you read fine print you will see they cover their butt.
