Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

The job is definitely a 4 to 5-year max affair

Anything beyond that is just working like a horse for nothing. If you can use the time to upgrade your skills or further specialize in an area, it’s a win for your resume. There are no real avenues for progression, expertise isn’t valued or nurtured. They’ll work you to death only to kick you to the curb. No paycheck is worth staying in this job longer than you need to or longer than you can gain something that will serve you down the road.

@OP So is every other job. Actually, it’s more like 2-3 years these days.

I stay at a company until I’m either laid-off or receive a better offer elsewhere. Seems to work because I’ve more than doubled my base pay in less than five years.

Realest thing I’ve read in a while. Gavin as many skills as you can, including training our replacements in India. Jump ship once we vest, I’m 10 yrs in and the last 5 haven’t seen a significant bump in pay to justify the madness of our annual renewal.

So many truths in this post.

XOM is a nice resume builder but in the long run you are better off not getting shackled with the “golden” handcuffs.
