Thread regarding TIAA (TIAA-CREF) layoffs

Tone def town hall

T leads off the town hall celebrating temporary employees (interns). Would be nice to maybe start with celebrating the full time employees. Next speaker, finance guy, immediately talking about a trip to Barbados. Wish I could afford a vacation to Barbados, sounds nice.

@15g meanwhile I’ve had probably 8 different roles over the last 20+ years and not one of them was a promotion including two promotions I applied for and received versus being given them for performance or mastery of skills of the level above me.

It would be nice to get recognized at this company and promoted the normal way like some but seems like you have to brown nose your way to the top and even then still have to apply for a “lateral” move and still not get the promotion.

@pk Very true! I recently applied and interviewed for another internal role that resulted in a small increase and it was labeled by HR as “promotion” in the system. Last time I checked they promotions don’t typically require multiple interviews. Just another instance of leadership “spin” on the truth.

FYI the CFO is from Barbados. Taking a trip home to visit the family is something a lot of immigrants do, it's not an exotic trip to Tahiti. That said he's made tone deaf statements in the past.

@10j yeah Barbados isn’t the Maldives.
But also you know he has a massive salary and yearly bonus bigger than most people’s salary as well as a large savings and retirement portfolio. So he has the money to go to Maldives or wherever.

The issue is regular average employees tend to use their bonus to pay down debt or pay income/property taxes or put it right in their retirement accounts.

We could use the money for a vacation instead but that would only delay paying debt or saving for retirement further. No raises in 3-4 years makes things even worse for most people.

So as an associate barely scraping by we do not want to hear about your vacations and trips around the globe. Whether they are personal or business trips, it doesn’t matter. Though business trips like what T talked about are actually worse because it could be done over Zoom like everything else since you can’t afford to pay people 2-3% more a year over the last 4 years, while losing talented people like water through a sieve.

It’s obviously really d-mb to talk about a vacation while laying people off. It’s also a Townhall, this is completely useless information. However, I’ve never seen an EC strive more to act like they are cool and fit in with people in public while doing the complete opposite in private. Every ask the EC session is a poor acting performance of being just like everyone else.

That said, Barbados isn’t the Maldives. You can get a vacation package for less than $1k a person with flights and that was just pulling up random dates. I understand that is still expensive for some people, but not even remotely out of the range of normal for a vacation now. Once again talking about the trip is mo--nic but it’s also not some flex.

@wm uhhh do you mean "disingenuous?"

i would cut some slack to David N (the wealth guy). He was very honest acknowledging how backwards the company is with back office processing. Executive's should always be modest and not mention the exotic trips they go on so the financial guy may have slipped up. T is as ingenuous as they come.

I got a “promotion” recently. It came with more work and no raise.

I’m looking for another job.

@my your ignorance is showing. Imagine feeling that entitled, to think you can question how someone spends their own paycheck. Truly pathetic. Use your privilege more productively.

Stay on topic folks. T’s here to stay so we can either get over it, or get over it.

@h7 Most 'promotions' they like to hype are the "apply, and interview for better-paying positions within the company" type. Few are the "you've done such a great job, we are moving you to a better title and better pay" promotion.

How much does the TIAA CEO make ? Base plus incentives ? Did she say how much she spends on hair treatments and Restoration Hardware remodeling at her 3 homes ?

Any validity to the statement that a 1,000 people were promoted last year. Is that true and what is the split of overseas vs US based employees?

Who said John Smith was White and male? Did you ask for “his” pronouns? Way to show and project the real racism….from you….hoooray DEI!

Wow. Why are there so many people downvoting the comments about John Smith being a bad thing. Y’all your white privilege and racism is showing.

People have been fired or asked to resign for less. His “joke” should result in an apology at the bare minimum.

@dp yeah, that was a bad one. There are way too many people from India here to be saying “we need basic white guy names so I don’t have to be respectful and learn how to say your name.”

Big oof.

@dp OMG yes! That was a disturbing disgusting comment he made about that. I would have yelled out “What?” if I was in attendance. Like it sounded so racist.

My name isn’t easy like John Smith or as complex as the one he could barely pronounce without pausing but everyone pronounces my name wrong too. It is sad T and others didn’t say anything.

I can’t believe the wealth leader said we need more employee names like ‘John Smith’. I’m sorry I’m ethnic and don’t have a Protestant name like probably all your real friends do, but it’s shocking that was said not once but twice as if it’s worth joking about. Not an inclusive statement at all.

Complete waste of time. Talked about losing a cafeteria menu contest? Interns. Trip to Barbados. Salmon BLT. Some new lame Wealth Management “benefit”. And of course Frisco plugs.

Most of us can barely afford shelling out the max for the company match 401k. Living paycheck to paycheck.

And the big news is our new benefit is wealth management advisor services? Idk about y’all but I have literally no wealth to manage. If I could withdraw or rollover my RA/Pension that TIAA puts in 100% of to my bank account or another firm, I would do it so freaky fast that even Jimmy John’s head will spin.

"Where my interns at?". Actually asked by a Fortune 100 CEO. They are where they always are: "Between the A and the T."

Aaaaand another town hall that was pointless. The audience looked so happy anytime the camera panned over to them. So excited to be here working more for less purchasing power. Quiet quitting will keep happening until morale improves.

As someone whose job was eliminated (and I am client facing and this is very disruptive to them) with one month left, that was a sloughhh to get through. I was laughing through a lot of it 🤣
