Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Farley out soon

The decision has been made to not renew his contract, the company has been interviewing candidates since January. Internally the only two for consideration are Frick and Fields. Externally, it’s a a blend of big tech up and comers, various auto executives, and some curveball candidates.

Despite Doug’s lack of success and impact to the bottom line, there is a contingent of board members and senior execs who believe he can transform Ford and build better ties out west where many are bullish on recruiting.

Frick has proven to deliver and is relatively liked across the board. But his lack of modern tech experience and mostly marketing experience means he will need to rely on partners (internal and external) around him to lead.

We should expect the announcement within the next month.

@c4+1k1dtmb40 it's so ironic isn't it? FNV4 management clearly didnt read about "the second system effect" from fred brooks The Mythical Man Month book. It's a classic "second system effect" that went on there. "oh we know how those id--ts did it in the past, so we smarter people are going to now make the Ultimate system." (then burn up tons of money and get cancelled.)

The National Safety Committee should shut down all of Ford with the Millions of recalls outstanding. Many Many Millions with no parts.

Second Fire Farley he is an id--t period.

He and Doug should have been gone long ago. Burning through cash and sh-----g on people at every turn. DF hasn’t delivered a single thing. Total failure and wasted real development time. I’m so over these id--ts.

Field just blew billions failing to launch FNV4, built by people he hand picked from everywhere but Michigan. So they were forced to roll back to the system built by everyone he laid off from Michigan.

DF is an outsider, yet another reason he alone should take on this role.

I've been under the impression that Farley is a puppet of Bill Ford. So I don't see him going anywhere.

I won't speculate on who, but historically (at least in recent years), Ford alternates between insider and outsider CEOs:

Bill (insider)
Mullaly (outside)
Fields (insider)
Hackett (outsider)
Farley (insider)

For better or worse, it looks like we're due for an outsider.

@OP I hope you are right, but I’m fairly skeptical. We can just go ahead and remove the boards input. Those folks are nodding at whatever the family wants and cashing their generous check. Not sure any valued guidance is coming from that crew.

The family knows what Farley is. Elena has been on the receiving end of Marcus Truby’s “beneficent and wonderful person” wrath several times. No one has bought that nonsense for a long time. All bullsh-t, but I’ve heard this riff before and he’s still here. Any candidate worth their salt from the outside ain’t coming to put their name on this mess. If you are successful (not likely given the state of the company) the family will resent you and run you out. And along the way you’ll get a lot of “suggestions “ on how to run the business that make no sense whatsoever, but more and more the company is an ATM for the family to take care of their limousine liberal social agenda, or dealers they happen to have affection for.

AF is a nice guy, but MS&S is not where you want your CEO of a manufacturing company to come from. Marketing folks are great at st-----g the family. It’s gone on for the last 60 years. The current director of sales is a master of it (though typical MS&S, he’s convinced he created the practice), but it’s a part of the company that has an outsized voice and importance and that’s one of the reasons this company is struggling.

Go get an engineer, a finance person, you know an adult, and let them bring in their own management team, stay out of the way, and pray they can turn it around.

It can’t happen soon enough. But the family won’t want a CEO anywhere but Dearborn.
Or maybe in the train station.

It sounds like a new CEO will look to replace old expended engineers in the Midwest with young engineers in bunny slippers from California. They will help adapt more California cellphone tech for use in cars instead of developing technology suitable for drivers. Being California oriented he will likely want EVs because he thinks they are cool, and they protect Californians’ investments in China. They will use rare-earth magnets. LIDAR will be used in self-driving cars because Lockheed-Martin says so. It sounds great…

Irregardless of what it means for the business. AF is the only choice to return this company to caring about its employees. AF cares about people. His direct reports and teams are generally good to work with. My understanding is he’s lot more flexible on work arrangements as long as work is getting done. This would be GOOD for employees.

DF would be the wrong pivot west coast ties or whatever. Skunworks is an awful team to work with and DF hasn’t delivered anything. His pseudo relaxed policy on what to wear aside I think he pivots the culture in the wrong direction.

As a ford employee first and foremost I want the culture to improve. Products won’t improve until culture does.

@a5 lol no chance. He just LARPs as some cool Silicon Valley wannabe CEO. “Come to the office we have ping pong tables, it’s your home here.”

Good luck prying talent away from tech or AI companies that are working on more innovative projects, have WFH flexibility, are not a Jurassic company with engrained inefficiencies. Come work at our dusty a-s Palo Alto office, there’s 15% of at coppa cafe!

They pray DF could get them closer to a deal with Apple so they can just get rid of the whole IVI department.

@OP

Give me whatever horse shoe fields has to continually fail up. His recruiting? Stearns? Roz? Jae Park? These are dime-a-dozen rent-a-consultancy shills.

It’s infuriating how these people can continually not deliver and be able to impact the lives of people who are actually capable.
