On the other hand, I know some employees taking month long vacations, and even when they are supposed to be working they are busy organizing cultural/religious events. They are not among those that are laid off.

This is a really relevant statement from the linked article. If Intel can't let go of its past it is over. Getting rid of the 20+ year people in management will be critical.

What are you going to complain next? That they are also spending their paychecks? Or that they are drinking the remaining free coffee?

A sabbatical earned has nothing to do with Intel’s incompetence.
Get it in while you can! They’ll find a way not to pay those (non-California employees) out when they lay you off.
