Thread regarding Chevron Phillips Chemical layoffs

Being laid off would be a blessing for me, really

I’m drowning here, overworked to the point of exhaustion, pulling 50+ hours a week. Management? A joke. Micromanagers who don’t understand the work but bark orders like they do. Bullied by supervisors who treat complaints like acts of rebellion. Communication is nonexistent, just endless confusion and mixed signals. No transparency, no respect. All that for pay that isn’t even worth showing up for. Why would I even care if I’m laid off from this godforsaken place? It’d be a blessing, not a curse.

@OP It's going to be a blessing for everyone in the long run. The people who got let go in the first wave will still remember a time when CPC was a great place to work with a great culture. It's going to erode quickly, and that shiny new multi-million dollar HQ on the lake is going to continue to empty out, either through additional lay-offs or through attrition. We'll remember those nice bonuses and those upbeat town halls and iCare Days, and being proud to be in public volunteering in our branded Chevron Phillips T-shirts.

Whiners. 50+ hours a week and you think you're abused. Try 70 to 100 hours a week for 30+ years without knowing from paycheck to paycheck if you'll have a job and then gripe.

@OP I'm not being sarcastic when I say that you are the only person at CPChem working 50+ hrs/wk. The work ethic at the company is non existent. So much dead weight sitting around milking the system which is the companies fault because they've set up a system where they treat the hard workers the same as the lazy slugs. Everyone "meets expectations" so the top performers leave once they realize there is no incentive and what remains are the dregs which is where the supervision and management are drawn from.

I wish I was in your situation. Unfortunately during the 10+ years I've been with CPC, I've been guilty of keeping up with the Joneses. With my savings, I can probably make it 4 months unemployed. If I end up being let go, hopefully it is some time from now so I can save more. I am a good worker and never thought my job would be at risk. I am definitely looking but the market is not good.

And I totally agree about micromanagers not having a clear picture of time and effort it takes for their request. Their time in an independent engineer role was too limited, leading to an immature level of technical understanding. CPC has got to be the leader in employing the most inexperienced professionals. But I definitely understand their hopping around from supervisor role to supervisor role. Salary advancement quickly plateaus for roles that require advanced level technical skill. Unfortunately this has been one of the main contributing factors for the costly mistakes that have occurred in Cedar Bayou and most likely the other sites as well.
