Leaving and coming back

Look, if you like Ford but hate the current regime and strategy you are being forced to take the blame for, well then you should leave for 1-2 years. On a few occasions there are people who have literally come back 1-3 levels higher than what they left as.

Also, 5 plus years is too much in one place nowadays.

I worked at both GM & Ford. Retired after 30+yrs from Ford. I told my kids when they graduated college do not accept an offer from a legacy auto company. They both found jobs outside the state in a different field.
I told my kids to work for a management that is both a visionary and has a plan. Not some Id--t who blames other people for his poor decisions, and a family that is a trust fund baby and is clueless about what is going on. Ford lost its focus a long time ago. Mr Know it All (JF) blaming employees and tariffs for the companies problems. Hate to tell you prior to the tariffs vehicles were stacking up on the dealer lots. Cost/quality out of control.

I don't think legacy automotive is a place to hang your career hat any longer. Any of the other companies (Rivian, Tesla, ect) would be better bets. GM will likely be the last one standing, but eventually will drop as well as they are putting up a tougher fight than Ford and Stellantis. Defense contractors (although more stable employers) are also laying off staff. You have to have the skills being sought after or know someone and be well liked to get a job.

My experience with the American automotive industry has left a deeply negative impression. It often feels like decisions are driven solely by compensation and short-term financial metrics, rather than genuine passion for engineering or commitment to people. The way companies like GM and Ford have treated their employees during downturns was disheartening almost coordinated, as if operating from the same playbook. Leadership choices have frequently seemed misguided, and looking back, I regret starting my career there.
Will I ever buy a vehicle from Ford, GM, or Stellantis? I never have and I’m certain I never will.
