Thread regarding American Electric Power Co. Inc. layoffs

Worse than the rest - and I’ve seen a few

I’m a relative newcomer at AEP, and I’ve worked at several companies before this. Most of them had their flaws, same politics, same inefficiencies, but somehow AEP takes the cake. It’s a daily struggle here. Leadership is stuck in the old ways and seems completely disconnected from what’s happening on the ground. Things are badly organized and inefficient, and honestly, it feels intentional, like nobody wants to fix anything that might challenge the status quo. The day-to-day environment? Easily the most political and gossipy place I’ve ever worked, and that’s saying a lot. If you’re someone who just wants to mind your business and do your job well, it’s hard to stay motivated when it’s clear that nobody above you really cares.

Agreed. This is my third company. I’m treating this job as a temporary solution while hoping the job market improves and we start seeing some real options.

This is the best company I've ever worked at. It has it's problems but it gets much worse out there.

I’m sorry that as a newcomer, this has been your observation. Most are desensitized and the temperature is clearly boiling but we’re barely sweating. I fear there is no easy answer or solution that the leaders can or will do. And to your point, many don’t care. Sadly I’ve resorted to gaslighting myself for survival and only minding my own business. I’ve been applying externally since January. It’s extremely thin in the job market. I will also say, information at AEP is dangerous and a luxury of leadership and HR. Sometimes ignorance is safety.

When you lose motivation it ends up being a lose-lose situation for both employee and the employer. The employee gets reprimanded and maybe even loses his job and the employer loses a valuable worker. And who's to blame? The employer. AEP is the best example of how an employee losing motivation is the employer's fault.

When all you have to do is vote yourself raises, how hard do you really have to apply yourself?
