Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Search is worthless

The intranet search used to be decent. I always used to search “overview” and filter PowerPoint and get a lot of great information on different topics.

You can’t search anything now. It either gets hung up or returns junk.

In circa 2000, we had the opportunity to contract with Google to provide an internal search engine for ExxonMobil Corporation. We chose to develop our own "inferior" search engine internally using ExxonMobil employees.

Moral of the story: You get what you pay for.

@r9 lol classic XOM!
Which business is going to pay for the big beautiful comprehensive search tool, and be accountable for its outcome? Is it Upstream, PS or?
The answer is no one, because you can’t claim a single $1 of benefit, and therefore only negative NPV from such an investment. No one wants to go to the managers with negative ROI, we have so many other higher ROI work. It’s a good General Interest idea but let some other altruistic persons do it, we have “real work” to do here, or PIP next year.
Good idea on paper, like World Peace. Never gonna happen ever.

Not too long ago we had 7 unique search tools. Each with a distinct purpose. And the corp will add a new one when someone complains loud enough that they cant find their docs on platform X. Anyone with at least a pea sized brain would instead purchase or build a comprehensive utlity and once its successfull, retire legacy search utils. But that will never happen at XOM. We spend billions on data purchase, creation and storage and couldnt find our ar-e, a hole in the ground, oil or our data.

Anyone remembered the joke about search 3 iterations ago? It must have been pre-Covid days. Someone brilliant and egoistic in P&GA, the department that owns homepage, decided the search on our new homepage should only search documents from P&GA's site, instead of intranet wide. When the search was rolled out, there were widespread complaints and 99.999% of searches returned nothing, because no one besides P&GA wanted to see P&GA internal working documents. But P&GA simply refused to restore to intranet search.

Everyone blamed EMIT, but the most frustrated people were in EMIT because, besides taking the blame for our stupid customer's decision, we relied on intranet search for all our work. This is a classic customer-is-brainless IT joke. It took maybe 4 months, for someone to come up with button options to indicate whether one wants to search intranet wide or just P&GA site. And even then, P&GA insisted the default option for everyone was their site.

I see P&GA as a low IQ airhead department since that incident, and have been stocking up popcorns since they started the publicity for this IEM thing in late June. LOL am not disappointed.

PG&A designed and selected the new Intranet site. Can’t blame EMIT for that one. Search is trash, though. But mostly blame Darren. He’s the reason we can’t move to full M365 and have good search and eliminate old SharePoint tech for everything. Junk in, junk out. Also, if our Geos and Engineers were worth their salt, we’d have more revenue right now and be able to afford nicer technology.

Replace "search" with EMIT and you will find out why

This search along with the new social media front page are both terrible. Whoever approved these should be PIPed immediately for lack of fields knowledge.
