They'll never say it outright, but this company expects you to choose between career advancement and family time. I've watched too many colleagues miss their kids' milestones for promotions that ultimately left them empty. The worst thing is that those sacrifices even more often go unrewarded. What's the point?

Absolutely. You certainly have the freedom to choose normal hours and work life balance. It comes with the freedom to not advance. GPs expect workaholics while modeling absenteeism.
There is nothing special about this culture after all.
