Thread regarding Edward Jones layoffs

Back when I started, managers actually looked out for people

Now, they treat you like a number. If you’ve got skills they don’t understand, you’re ignored. They keep hiring folks fresh out of school and fast-tracking them while those of us with decades in the trenches are stuck. Not surprised so many don’t stick around, they can see there’s no real path forward here.

@109 while I don’t expect level 4 and above leaders to be too in the technical weeds, I do expect leaders closer to the work to have a decent amount of technical skill and experience. How can you hire for technical roles if you don’t understand the work? Unfortunately in my area front line leaders who directly manage developers have no actual coding experience (in the last 20 years) so they have no idea how to hire for developer roles or tech lead roles. They hire more for personality than skill. At some point it was decided that at Jones a leader was just a glorified paper pusher for HR tasks and escalations. They have no ability to provide coaching or mentoring for their teams.

People they're hiring Into the big seats are a joke. Bring on a tech director with zero experience in tech, I don't even think this dude knows how to use his smart phone and can't figure out why our tech rollouts are trash. I mean when it takes 3 people go draft a paragraph Email to make sure it's not over his head that's a problem. Stop dragging in these clueless jackasses from outside companies. Plenty of great talent is being wasted here in favor of people from big name companies.

One of my TL would always spin around comments they made to me. Then they opted to give me the deer in the headlight look.

Not sure how some folks made it to the leadership level. 50/50 shot an associate gets a great leader. W Rhe associates will ALWAYS be a number. Also job titles don't mean squat.

HR has been hiring from the outside vs. promoting from within. Kept salary raises down through periods of high inflation. Kept bonus numbers down in spite of us being level 9 and 10. All to make GPs record profits. I make less after adjusting for inflation than I did 5 years ago. Now we get to be reimagined.

They've always treated folks by a "number." I've also called myself a "peon" employee after 15+ yrs..... Human Capital is NOT for the employees it's for the firm.
