Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Did Intel really need all these PhD’s

Hire people that have a lot less lower degrees. They will be grateful and most will be loyal to you.

The waste in spending is when they hire a foreign engineer with a PHD to do entry level jobs that hire at a bachelor degree outside the U.S. This also shows an incredible level of incompetence if an Indian migrant on h1b needs 9 years of college to do the same entry level job that the Vietnamese or Malaysians can do with a 4 year degree.

There's a bunch of comments of how techs are better than PhD...

There are plenty of folks working at Intel. There are useless techs and useless PhDs.
But if you are the tech badmouthing "all" PhDs, you're certainly on the not-good camp yourself.

There are folks on both sides playing the system too.

The ratio of training to education used day to day is for sure higher at bigger companies, but sometimes that extra understanding goes a long way and can still be satisfying

Actually decent PhDs will leave Intel. My team had 90% of PhD… There’s no research happening anymore or anything that would exercise the brain muscle. Just a boring product/project management and useless CIP efforts requiring 10 approvals from people knowing nothing about the process before it’s implemented.

People with PhDs are there for the work and are likely there because they love what they are doing. People with MBAs may have more business knowledge but also play the game of managing up to climb the ladder and to be their current managers' pet. That's where management has fallen in the last decade or more. Too much game and not enough support for loyal good ol' fashioned work and for supporting employees.

Which do you value more, a loyal but talentless employee, or a brilliant employee who expects the company to compensate him well?

OP, I hope they don't hire people who write like you. Also, who will develop the products and processes? We don't need a group of puppies adopted from the local rescue center.

OP... silly employees, regardless of their title are loyal. There are not that many PhDs generally at Intel... And they have sh---y papers mostly :/ That's why our PhDs are actually loyal ! If they are good, they keep going . One of our research labs is really cool tho, hope we stick to them. MBAs tho? Now we are talking about the real scam. Especially from funny schools. Layoff overdue.
