Thread regarding 3M layoffs

The only reason I’m holding on is because of a really bad job market

Otherwise, I would have left in a second. The job has become so exhausting, mentally and physically, simply because the company is badly managed and has completely lost its way. I remember the times when the job was challenging and demanding, but I actually enjoyed the sense of accomplishment and never felt this tired. Now, I can barely drag myself to work.

What? How many older people got laid off but fresh grads hired? Anyway, I think the point was that job boards aren't necessarily useful -- fake ads, fake recruiters, fake jobs. Make actual contacts in your field.

"Rely on your network" is such outdated boomer advice.

Nowadays, because we can't discriminate against old people fewer credentials and fewer skills, we need to get funneled through the HR pipeline.

So a person with 10 years of experience can never beat out the 70-year-old with 40 years of experience who won't retire because they have no meaning in their life outside of work.

Rely on your network, not job boards. The "quick apply" features just make a bunch of unqualified people apply for random jobs, cluttering up the pipeline. If you don't have many external contacts, make some! Industry activities, friends of friends....a lot of people are willing to help

If Tireman was that good, he would not have retired early before 65. His nonsense theory of “AND” is so sh1tty. Cut inventory, cut manpower, cut overtime, more yield, more service OTIF. ……enjoy retirement with dear Dominic

I think Tireman was, by some margin, the worst leader 3M manufacturing has ever had. His tactics were shallow and self interested. Never once did he care for our operators or anyone else for that matter. His record was abysmal and leaves behind a legacy of ruin.

People with legitimate gripes getting 15 or more negative votes...

You can't tell me there are that many satisfied 3M employees who all feel like their hard work and dedication are rewarded with promotions, let alone encouraged with a long-term incentive program, or even small success being celebrated with extra and small gifts.

You need to stop caring. 3M stopped being a career for me about 8 years ago. Once businesses started collapsing, job security went out the window (regardless performance or effort), talent left in droves, and opportunities to move up vanished, this became a just a job. I do the bare minimum while extracting as much pay as possible from this decrepit dying he11ho1e of an employer. 3M taught me well—if I can’t improve my personal top line then I’m cutting personal COGS (effort). Happy to stay around and watch the train wreck, silently laughing. Pass the popcorn.

My boss’s boss doesn’t GAF about 3M. My boss doesn’t GAF about 3M. I sure as he11 don’t GAF about 3M.

I departed two years ago when the workplace atmosphere became unbearable. I enjoyed my job and did it well. Yet, the leadership was most unkind to me. As a minority woman among men of another race, I found myself subject to a campaign of calculated hate —resources were taken from me, trivial assignments heaped upon me, and my own team, once under my guidance, reassigned without notice to another, a man of their own choosing. My essential travels, sanctioned at first, were revoked at the eleventh hour. At last, their objective was fulfilled, and I walked out. It was the best decision I made.

I like the stuff I work on, and I would like my job if it weren't for the fact that leadership is so dysfunctional.

I don't want to work at 3M anymore; they've taken away so many job benefits, there are no advancement opportunities, because Bill Brown is trying to drive out employees. As soon as the job market improves I'm off to greener pastures; Bill can get what he wants.

Completely agree! It’s created a job mentality versus career and passion. The incentives and bonuses that have been taken away leave a lack of motivation. What’s left does not create upside opportunities so it’s now just a job. Happy to have a job!
