A bit inaccurate on number of promotions after 30. CLs start to jump in 2s with management track as 30, 32, 34, 36, 38 and technical exec being odd CLs so it takes less than 9 promotions to go 29->38.

why are VPs so miserable and unlikeabke if they are making millions? whats the point? and why does exxon promote such pathetic people who no one seems to want to follow but are forced to follow?

And is this true..CL 30 at age 35?!! one would start at CL 22 out of college so thats like 8 promotions is first 12 years. What wonders has such a new hire done in their first years? Who are these crazy super smart people and where are they? nodding their heads like a donkey working the CP26 spreadsheet?

I know several young (age 35) CL 30 with CL 38 potential. It is very hard to have a 38 potential and be over 40 years old and only a CL 29. 9 promotions in 15 years is not going to happen

It only matters if you are Pot CL38 or higher. VPs don’t care or take time nor sponsor people with CL34 potential or lower. That’s how the system is designed and how VPs get rewarded for their sponsored people’s progression.

So if VP doesn’t know or like you, you aren’t getting past 29 or into jobs that would help you do so.

@f7 I assume you’re asking looking for an honest answer. Location, family situation (Exxon is easier on families with kids in my experience. Especially with consulting which is where I would have to go to make more), no desire to actually be a 36/38 in position at the end but enjoy the benefits while I have it and see how far I get. Once the ride ends I can do anything else.

You simply enjoy the carrot, until you can't anymore. At some point even super HiPOs get disappointed. Remember JPW and DWW had to race to be CEO. I'm sure JPW was disappointed at the end.

So ultimately you ride the train, until the wheels fall off. If you hold on long enough... you'll get the golden handcuffs, so you su-k it up and become miserable like regular employees.

On the really bad days, you check your beqom and wipe your tears with your accumulated RSUs

It's impossible to get out of 27 now without someone who strongly believes in you.

@f7+1jx2e97h6, a HiPo wouldn't survive if they had to perform without the protection they are offered at XOM. Bang for their buck XOM is place to be for them.

I have a tangent question... if you were truly a person with high potential why would you stay here?

The money at Exxon is a joke compared to what you could make from starting a business built on your good ideas or making an in estment fund based acquisitions company with a couple of friends.

As the North Carolina Business School Dean told 300+ ExxonMobil employees at their Chapel Hill, North Carolina management training class:

"For every employee that makes it to V.P. in ExxonMobil (CL-34+), there are 3000 employees with tombstones in the local cemetery that tried and failed to make it to V.P."

The odds are against you to be a V.P. in ExxonMobil.

We also have too many CL-28/-29's. It is unlikely that you will ever be promoted to CL-34.

It feels like a lie. They promise you something but have no intention of delivering it.

It isn’t worth it because your chance of hitting your potential is so small. It is smoke and mirrors to keep you around. Especially now with the reductions and layoffs in HC10 there are too many high CL with not enough jobs for them to keep moving up. Everyone is fighting over scraps and there are fewer and fewer scraps as each year passes.

I am CL29 with a CL34 POT. The chances of me ever getting to 38 POT is very slim. Any CL34 are getting over looked as we have too many CL38 POT so all the sweet roles are being given to them:

S&D are preferentially given all of the top jobs to the Snr Exe potential people. It becomes a vicious circle because they hate taking the CL38+ off people once it’s given and equally hate pushing a CL34 up… this would mean that they were wrong. Also they have a new program for CL38 POT where they all have career advocates (aka Sponsors).

Real 34 here. Everything those two said are correct. I’ll also note 36 and 34 are worlds different from my experience

I don’t understand your question. Are you looking for Actual 34/36s today and asking is the payoff worth it?
Or are you talking about actual mid-level (27-29) tagged with 34/36 potential and is the pathway differentiated vs a lower POT?

Answer to the latter is I’ve noticed the select jobs that naturally have connectivity to senior leaders (planning positions) or positions that are easier but still check the box are given to the higher potential folks. I also see people skipping positions and being in positions for less time for those with higher POT.

But you still have to be flexible (mobility, be ready to bend over backwards) and I see this being the juncture where people start exiting the rat race.
