Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Some questions regarding working at Meraki

I am making some moves toward joining Meraki as a software engineer. There are many things to consider, and I have some questions that I don't think is appropriate for me the ask the recruiter at this stage, so here I am.

  1. I know that Cisco itself has regular layoffs. What is it like and how does it affect Meraki, particularly on the engineering side?
  1. I know that the real answer to this question is that "it depends on the team/manager". But just as a general culture question, how strict are teams about being available at fixed time windows (e.g. 9-5 PST) vs. keeping things flexible as long as you get your work done?
  1. Another culture question. I am US-based and have family in Canada. Since the role is remote, I'm hoping this will be a great way to be able to spend more time with my family, like being up in Toronto for a month at a time. Timezone matching will not be an issue. But that will be contingent on being able/allowed to work while outside of the US. Do they track your laptop? And again, I know that the true answer is going to be "it depends", but some general sentiment would be helpful and informative.
  1. Once issued a Meraki or Cisco badge, does that grant me access to every Meraki or Cisco office worldwide?

Disagree never been a better time
Infighting is done
Proper team alignment

Brink wants a dashboard led motion for renewals

People renew meraki
Probs be rebranded at some point but the logic stays the same

I'd be careful joining the "Meraki" team as this is part of product line that is being consolidated under a unified on prem and cloud portfolio. There will be no "meraki" moving forward as you knew it.

My 2 cents, cliques don't go away unless middle and senior management is changed which hasn't happened. SW and HW are usually engineering terms so it doesn't look like the poster was addressing sales, but maybe idk.

If it's "silly" why do you need non-Cisco channels to communicate in, what don't you want Cisco to know?

There are no more Meraki only offices, they've all been converted into hub offices. So you'll have access to everything.

The clique culture was phased out by COVID, most of the folks currently working in sales never experienced "peak meraki".

You'd be surprised at what your ISRs are responsible for, Acct management, channel enablement, demos, troubleshooting, EA mgmt, the list goes on. Now to be sure, it varies by IC but Meraki ISRs work incredibly hard and are not the same ISRs from 2018.

As for plotting against Cisco, this is silly. We work within the POD. Now I can't speak to Select, but in MM and SMB, Meraki and Cisco walk hand and hand. Again, a lot has changed as Meraki has less resources and relies more on Cisco Marketing budget and resources.

On that note, Meraki and GVSE are merging in FY26, so Meraki as a BU is pretty much done. Legacy tools and systems are actively being phased out. If you really love meraki, I would say work in Channel. If you're more a fan of the one cisco story, now is a great time to join.

Meraki is like a petty Jr. High School clique. If you're in a clique, you're good, if not, you're not. Meraki's technical depth is woeful compared to the rest of Cisco and if you read this board, you know how bad that is. On the plus side, SW is Meraki's stronger point ... their HW groups just get dinners and pick vendors in Taiwan with virtually no technical understanding.

I think the best summary of how Meraki operates is that every day they use channels outside of Cisco to communicate/plot/conspire where Cisco can't "watch" them. This pretty much sums up their characters and lack of ethics.

If you're in a clique in SFO, it can be ok, they do spoil themselves. If you are offsite, you're nothing, so don't consider it a long term or especially a career growth position. The Meraki trolls will probably thumbs down me, but now you've heard the truth regardless.

There are some offices your will NOT be able to access because they have their own card access system or you don't have the proper clearance.

Generally speaking though, they are in the minority.

@cv I'm in where I guess you would call medium cost of living (reno) so hopefully they don't care that I'm spending time in areas with higher cost of living. It sounds like my laptop location can be tracked but practically speaking, how would someone who cares about the pay adjustment be alerted about my location?

@cs that is good to hear about #1. I was mostly concerned because someone I know who worked in either finance or marketing was paid off a months ago. Wasn't sure how that reflected in the engineering side

Too many CA folks moved to the mid west during Covid and abused the CA pay while living in a VLCOL location loophole.

No one ever wants to be paid for the actual value they create!

If paid as if living in CA, and you work more than 4 weeks outside of CA, that would be grounds for either pay adjustment or up to termination.

  1. More resilient and immune historically specially in the down market meraki has not been impacted as much by LRs

You never know in the future however

  1. Being a team player is a big thing, being hybrid is great generally can get things done when I want to suit. But early in career be present and establish a rapport with teams and manager
  1. You have mdm on your laptop and ISE your laptop and ip can be tracked no one gives a sh-t as long as you don't start showing red flags, show up and complete your work
  1. Once issued a Meraki or Cisco badge, does that grant me access to every Meraki or Cisco office worldwide?

Yes worldwide

How are your PPT skills and BS abilities? If they are in good order you’ll fit right in. He-l, you might even make VP.
