Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Does brown-nosing work?

No negative comments. Share real stories? If you are a leader, do you like employees that brown nose?

p.s in my experience, I noticed ppl that know what they are doing never do the acts of brown nosing.

It's funny how people view being friendly or approachable to decision makers is somehow a bad thing.

Great work, done in a corner and not shared with the appropriate leaders isn't worth sh-t.

It does make a difference being seen, going to lunches. Being involved in “alphabet” groups, and landing jobs where you brush shoulders with higher PSG’s….pretty much all the things except doing your actual job. Admittedly, I’m not good at that game and have had to train those that are to take higher positions. Last week, I was literally told by my manager that being exceptionally good at your job was not good enough to be recognized for promotion, so yes, brown nosing is required. Subsequently, they also told me they get credit for your work by saying “I directed” or other vague language in their PMP. Don’t make the mistake that I did by thinking that your loyalty and results-driven work ethic will get you noticed.

Definitely yes. Best example I can think of is returning expats. Vast majority did nothing while overseas other than collecting foreign premiums. When they return, they "talk up" their experience to clueless stateside managers, and are granted meaningless positions in CTC or Reserves. Then the cycle repeats as they themselves grant meaningless positions to other returning expats. Now that there aren't many returning expats, all these "managers" keep getting promoted in the "transformed" Chevron (hence why we've been "winning" so much the last ten years). Two things about returning expats: 1) See if you can get one to talk for more than 3 minutes about what they actually accomplished overseas. 2) Name one who has returned to an actual skill-based position in a BU upon return.

A perfect example is that there are 19 individuals from Fox hired into the current administration.

Just be yourself.

The ultimate “brown nosing” is presenting solutions or taking care of problems instead of asking your boss what to do.
