Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Force Relocation happening in Research today

I am in calls with colleagues today who are being told they have 30 days to relocate to an approved office or be fired.

It would be nice if someone could talk about Research in more detail than what is usually described. Not all Research "jobs" are as fungible as jobs in development, consulting and sales, because they depend a lot on subject matter expertise that isn't easy to find. You're not going to just replace a US superstar researcher with some young blood in India or Eastern Europe or someplace like that, because it's not a 1-1 or even a 1-many swap. So to understand what is really going on, you (we) have to understand what is really happening in the Research division. What are they working on or not working on? Are they actually making new discoveries that might be useful someday, or are they just spinning their hamster wheels like a lot of R&D shops?

According to the IBM web site, Research has four focus areas: Semiconductors, AI, Quantum, and Hybrid Cloud. So what's going on in those four areas? Is IBM doing any current work in any of those areas? Are these RTOs negatively affecting R&D efforts, or is it just more head cutting for pointless projects? There's bound to be some, even in Research.

RTO is a tactic to offshore jobs to India without having to pay for severance packages

IBM seems to be choosing their own facts when it comes to AI. They say they had to hire back folks when AI replaced HR, yet the annual report says total headcount worldwide went down (282 to 270). Somebody’s not telling the truth. Perhaps the headline is IBM hired back in India while the layoffs in NA/Northern Europe have remained permanent. No matter what the true facts are, it’s obvious IBM wants to reduce headcount in NA and Northern Europe by any means and outsource that headcount to India. I suspect the true strategy is acquire any needed talent via acquitions, and outsource any and all labor and support ASAP. Apple has become a 3 trillion dollar company using that model, and IBM seems to be mimicking it for the mainframe.

It’s proven office attendance increases teams results; it’s also a way to fire staff without PIPs

If you have good credentials and patents in research, you can work for a better firm like google , Microsoft etc..

So what is the future function of Dario Gil, the highly "brilliant bullshi**er and con artist" from IBM Research and another of Alvind's hangers-on pipmunks ? Seems like he's not got the job for Undersecretary of Science at the Department Of Energy (as yet !). With the Trump administration downsizing everyone in Government everywhere, what does Gil's future look like ?

@f3

Alvind needs the transferred headcount for his most favored nation - India - so that he can show his leader, Modi that he earned his medals...and his $100 million bonus. All legally, of course.

Reduced headcount?!?!? Whenever IBM lays off people, it hires right back the same amount of people... granted at a lower rate, but lower headcount is certainly NOT a goal.

Investors want reduced headcount. Alvind is their puppet and he wants 100 million for 2026

Alvind is soulless, arrogant, lacks professionalism, rude, and obnoxious.

Ginny mortally wounded Research 10+ years ago .. like the rest of IBM it just takes a long time to die.

Sad !

Alvind will do anything for his $100 million bonus even if it means selling his family, parents and grandparents to people traffickers. Krabanaugh, Blob Thomas and the rest of the Pipmunks will do the same too. Zero loyalty to anyone but themselves.

It is happening all over the place… it is brutal and so many good IBMers are going to have to leave IBM because they can’t relocate!
