Is that how they notify people?

This is exactly how it was for me. I received a meeting invite from my boss's boss, who is based in Europe, and when I texted him to ask what the meeting was about, his reply was standard corporate garbage. In fact, after finding this webpage I knew what was coming.
HR was not listed on the meeting invite, but there she was in the meeting. Boss read from an obviously prepared script, and the HR goon expressed no sympathy or concern whatsoever as I was informed that my position was terminated.
I worked at Medtronic for four years and received good performance reviews. The way they did this is simply disgusting.
What is a slap in the face for everyone is there is a lot of job openings in India.
I pray that I get laid off. This company has gone down the gutter and all they do is put more work on the people who are still standing. Shame on GM and the ELT for their abysmal “leadership”. They are robbing the company blind to the detriment of the workers and the patients we serve!
Thank you!
I get 60 days of "notice period," which is basically paid vacation at my normal rate while I look for another job with all medical benefits until the last day of the month this period ends (for me, July 31st). I'll also receive my MIP bonus payment when employees get theirs since I finished out FY25. Then at the end of the notice period, if I hadn't started another job with Medtronic, I get a lump-sum payment of 2 weeks for every year I've been a regular full-time employee (started as a contractor, which doesn't count). I've been there over 6 years, so I get 12 weeks' pay at one time.
There are some things that could risk the lump-sum payment, such as going to work for a competitor, etc. There didn't seem to be any differentiation between not having a job at the end of the notice period and finding a job with another company (not a competitor). They also provided a lot of resources for helping find another job (including training, resume and interviewing support, virtual job fair information, etc.).
Also, fun fact, you're still an employee for the 60-day notice period, so you're considered an in-company hire if you were to apply for other Medtronic jobs. Your Recognize! points also don't expire, and you can purchase things with them even after you're Notice Period ends.
You get a whole PDF (like ~20 pages) explaining all of this and a letter with employment verification you can provide to potential new employers that you worked there, what your salary was, and that you were leaving in good standing.
To the person that got laid off, I’m sorry or congratulations! Would you mind sharing what the severance offer was in terms of weeks per years service! Best of luck 🤞
Remember to cash out your recognize points, either by using them to buy things or to buy Visa gift cards. You don't want to leave those on the table.
I had my "Business Update" meeting, which was originally just scheduled to be me and my boss. We both logged in, then so did someone from HR. I got the spiel about how the company had to look at itself as a whole and buckle down where it could and how that "unfortunately impacted [my] position."
The "separation package" is pretty good, and they recommended to look for another job at Medtronic while I was still listed as a "non-working employee," which lasts for another 60 days.
Not every business meeting is a layoff.
For example during the last mass layoffs in 2023, my skip scheduled a business meeting with my team saying our immediate manager was laid off to give all clear signal that it was complete .
They'll also be a business update meeting at the end of the day - that will be the meeting that says we are mission-driven, had to right-size, focus on what's important ----- and we layed off a bunch of good people.
But YOU were not layed off, so get to work doing more with less.
Just FYI, they'll also use Business Update to let you know if your manager has been laid off or moved to a different org, but HR probably won't be present if that happens.
When you get a meeting invite with your supervisor and some rando HR person, just start packing up your desk.
Soon Business update will be with nobody because everyone will be RIF
Business update ? Whose business ? Certainly not the impacted employee. More like monkey business. Flush some more people and repeat, year after year.
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
This management team knows no other way, and has no impetus to do so until they milk it dry. $$$$
Sadly, it eventually comes to an end. For everyone.
Terrible.
Yesterday, my boss scheduled a "Business Update" meeting with me for today. It had a much more formal tone than she usually uses, and I suspected it would be for this reason.
Yes. When I got laid off, the meeting was titled “business update” or something along those lines.
Allegedly. Allegedly. Ignorant. Allegedly.

Good luck to everyone. Try to take time to laugh, rest and relax. Enjoy life if you get laid off.
Sorry, I'm new.
