Thread regarding HP (Hewlett-Packard) layoffs

How much notice were you given?

CW here. The staffing agency sent me an email last Friday saying my last day is today. Isn't this illegal? To those already laid off, how much notice were you given?

@pk You’re the type who should be next on the WFR list. You’re a joke.

If you want the big bucks, start your own staffing firm.

The CWs should start referring to themselves as Temps. It reinforces your status to the FTEs you work with.

You're a CW... that says it all.

In at-will employment, both employers and employees can terminate the employment relationship at any time, for any reason, as long as it's not illegal. This means an employer can fire an employee without cause or notice, as long as the reason for termination is not discriminatory or otherwise unlawful.

Because my manager was fired a week prior (excellent logistics skills, HP!) the Section Manager had to travel from CRV to SD just to fire me. (Not to visit the Sea World). He was let go the following week.

I’m a FTE on CREWS and I don’t work at all. Just drink, have fun, and drink some more.

He’s right. I’m a FTE and I work maybe 45 min a day.

You and all CWs deserve far better. CWs have always done the heavy lifting at HP, whereas most FTEs do nothing other than attending useless meetings, writing emails, and polishing PPTs. As a former HP FTE, I saw this every single day.

HP is well known to treat its CWs like garbage, always has and always will. Just move on and don't look back.

CWs can get let go at anytime for any reason. You can sneeze the wrong way and you can get let go.

I was an FTE at HP until a few years ago. I got two weeks notice but I wouldn’t expect CWs to get the same treatment. The fact that you got any heads up is nice of your agency to do.

They owe you nothing. Most contract companies get the notice and end you right there. Now your state may have certain laws but here you can be notified and let go the same day. Good luck. More changes to come.

It does not matter if you are an employee or CW; no advance notice is required, unless a contract or union is involved (not likely at HP).

Working via a staffing agency doesn't give you the same rights as if you were a permanent employee of the company/corporation where the agency placed you.

You are essentially a temp. and working completely at the discretion of the agency's choice. They can boot you from any assignment with zero advance notice, because you're essentially a street ho being pi---d out by them. Of course it's in their interest to keep you working, since they skim off a large % of what HP pays them to place you there, but if HP says they don't need/want you anymore, that's the end of the assignment, and you either move on to a new one through the same agency, or get work someplace else.

So no, it's not illegal for them to tell you to hit the road, if the company they're contracting with for your services tells them that they no longer need you. You aren't working for HP, you're working for the agency. It's not considered a lay-off either, if for whatever reason, your assignment/contract with the agency via their client (HP) has now ended. So you don't get WARNed, nor severance, just as you didn't get any of the other benefits HP offers its employees...because again, you're not an employee of HP, you were just contracted out by a different company (the agency) to work at HP for a while.

If you want the "stability" and "rights" of a full-time, permanent employee, then become one. Maybe your agency can place you for your next assignment in a temp.-to-perm. position, where the company where you'll be working is looking to hire someone permanently, but wants to "test drive" the potential hire first. Or ask the agency that you want to switch from contract/temp. assignments, to just being directly placed into a permanent position. There are many other agencies, who can help you with this too, if the one you're with now isn't open to/busy enough to find this for you...check 'em out.
