“AI” (large language models) are net negative productivity, and are just being used as cover for yet another huge offshoring push across the tech industry.

We are in the midst of a sea change. Between outsourcing and AI, the software engineering profession no longer has the bright prospects it had historically.

But not everything will be outsourced, and AI can’t do everything. The best software engineers will survive. Also, those with marketable domain specialties, such as computer security, defense work — or SAS V9.

Every software developer at SAS must acquire marketable skills, or make up their minds to finish their careers there. If you need to look for a job, prepare for a long search.

One can still find a job with SAS V9 skills. Finding a job with SAS Viya skills? Good luck with that unless you want to work at SAS Institute. And who knows the shelf life of a gig at SAS Institute.

It is sad to see so few jobs that require SAS. Most ask for R and Python… and Tableau.

Knowing SAS has gone from a scarce skill to a scarcely needed skill. The hype squad

As stated in the OP’s video, America has let most manufacturing go overseas, and specialized in high tech, where we have an edge.

Unfortunately, high tech does not employ the people who used to work in our factories.

That’s one reason our politics has become so divisive. Our working class has lost the American Dream, and they understandably resent it.

We can bring manufacturing back to America. But to make our factories competitive, we’ll have to pay the same wages that China and India pay.

It's unsustainable for labor costs to be so different in different countries. They will level out.

That may take another few decades. In the meantime, jobs — including jobs at SAS Institute — will continue to go overseas.

When foreign labor costs 1/3 of American labor, of course jobs move overseas. That's just free-market capitalism.

Ma’s strongest point is that America had 13 wars in the past 30 years. Those wars gained us little; that money could have been spent creating American jobs.

Outsourcing will not stop until labor costs equalize. Our government could take action to smooth that transition. We have chosen conflict instead.
