Is this how layoffs at UPS work? This is the first layoff I'm about to face and I'm just wondering if I should already start looking for something else since I've been here less than five months. This is incredibly scary because I really can't afford to be without a job right now.

Yes, this is how it works. UPS does not care about you, so you must be proactive.
Find another job first, then give your notice. Don't quit without a job lined up. If you get laid off at least you will get unemployment benefits. Only stay at UPS if you are here for the long run, e.g., you plan to be a driver (RPCD), or want/need teamster benefits with a PT job; otherwise you will likely be happier some place else anyway.
