Thread regarding SAS Institute layoffs

What's the news on buyout exits?

Did more people take it than you expected, or less? I'm surprised by how many are cutting and running. I don't blame them for doing it but it feels like too little too late.

Some people who have been entrenched in leadership roles here are exiting and I'm glad to see it. But that means some kind of reorg in a few areas is to be expected.

Gross revenue for JMP sets the appearance that JMP is making money. But gross revenue can be a misleading metric regarding profit. Net revenue much harder to accurately determine, the biggest reason for that is SAS does not yet have an accounting system that can drill down to the necessary granularity to determine all the expenses associated with JMP. Salary + benefits.is the practical limit of current granularity. There are way more expenses than just salary+benefits which need proper accounting in order to determine if JMP is indeed even profitable.

Until all that is in place, few truly know whether or not JMP is profitable. An organization like Broadcom iis in the business of quickly determining if the juice is worth the squeeze. So far, no one has nibbled enough to get hooked by the SAS bait.

SAS: ~$3B / ~12,000 = $250K ARR per employee

JMP: ~$150M / ~500 = $300K ARR per employee

As long as JMP is <5% of SAS, and doing better than most of SAS, it’s not a place they’ll make layoffs. For this reason, JMP will remain “a safe, but very small cocoon” up until the day SAS is sold or IPO’d.

The eventual owner of SAS and JMP is likely to be a company that uses the milk-until-dry business model. They’ll view both SAS and JMP as cash cows, do mass layoffs of both, and milk them until they’re dry.

I wish I saw a happier ending. At least the sale/IPO has evidently been delayed. That’s best for both JMP and SAS employees.

Heard some in JMP have taken recent buyouts, not sure if any took the most recent buyout - or if it was even offered to JMP.

Layoffs are a different matter. Do not know of any layoffs ever happening to anyone in JMP. Compared to the rest of SAS, JMP is a a safe, but very small cocoon.

Maybe because JMP is a wholly owned subsidiary now. Not sure when that happened and if that was the case during previous buyouts though.

That's surprising. The first two buyouts were offered to JMP employees, and several people accepted.

The package was not offered to JMP employees. That part of SAS seems to be doing better financially than the parent.

No new offer has come through. Total BS.

I know that a little over 700 were eligible and a little under 200 took the package.

How many building on campus are totally empty? Which building will be next to become empty?

Retired years back and just do not have the heart to drive through campus. I want to remember SAS for when it was a vibrant and healthy company.

Good luck to all!

Did any mediocre or under producing employees take it? Nearly every person I know who took either a VRBP or left for another company in the last 4 years have all been tier 1A and 1B talent.

To be clear, there are still top performers at SAS who haven’t left, but It’s clearly all about the $$$/employee ratio at this point.

@b1+1jspvgpeb Nope it wasn’t posted by me to prove a point. But oddly it does prove the very same point I wasn’t trying to prove.

Y’all are full of BS

“Not enough people took the offer by the April 15 deadline so a new offer was made, going from six months to a year. There was a flurry of new takers”

Clearly this is BS. My guess is that this was posted by that dude who is always claiming other posts are BS to prove a point.

Can someone provide more details? I just asked a long-term employee who did not take the 6-month offer, and that person knew nothing of a revised offer.

Some top R&D Devs with decades of experience are exiting.

I got the original offer, did not see the follow-up. Or am I mis-reading that? Or was it for a select number of longer-term employees than myself? (I didn't take it).
