The majority of parts on GMs most profitable (for the time being) vehicles are made outside the US. If these tariffs stay in place there will be major commercial impacts to GM.

Need stability to commit resources. This environment is like Cuba in 1959.

I'll provide an opposing viewpoint. Trying to bring manufacturing back to the US isn't a bad idea, but whats happening is that its being FORCED to happen, if it happens at all.

Those in charge...(the person that was put in charge) is out of touch with what it takes to being online a full blown manufacturing plant. First it can't happen overnight, it takes a year or more, running full throttle, to get it set up. Now what is not taken into account is the machines to do the manufacturing, or often not made stateside. So to build a plant, its going to cost much more now because the costs of those tariffs are now added into the cost of the plant. Second, you need a skilled workforce, or train a workforce to run the machines. In other parts of the world, constant hiring and training of a workforce is built into the system, because the turnover is quite high. Workers leave for time off, and never return. Chinese new year...its also a huge turnover in the labor force. But its built into the system to constantly hire the lower wage workers. America does not have low wage workers. People come here, legally or not, to get a better paying job than they had back in the home country. Or...companies set up factories in those countries because honestly...if you could get a decent job and not have to move thousands of miles to an unknown place where maybe you are not really wanted but are wanted...wouldn't you stay home as well? Back when the tariff was all the rage, late 1800's and early 1900's....it wasn't as much of a global economy as it is now. Everything is tied to this, and honestly it was working OK. Sure maybe there were cases where it wasn't but for the most part, it was. Jobs leaving the country because it was lower cost to build in say Mexico, are harder to bring back unless you pick up that workforce and pay them the same. But what person would stay at a low paying job for that long before going across the street to do something similar for double the wages. It just aint that simple folks. AND what drives it all? People want to pay the lowest amount for the things they want or need. And we all want more money. Is the tariff the shot in the arm the global...not just American...economy needed? Personally I don't think so, but time will tell. It will be a pain point for a lot of people for the next few years. Job losses will happen. And of course when you don't have a job, you make due with what you have, so you don't buy extra stuff... vacations, cars, new electronics. So then the companies supporting those extras....have to slow down production or close because they can't sell the product. Then more jobs are lost. Bottom line, what we had at the beginning of the year was working OK....and the rich folks...or those who planned for such a thing...will be OK. The rest of us....we can only hope to get through it.
