Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Get out while you can on your own terms.

Saddened but not surprised to see another RA ripping through IBM. Having gone through this in 2024 I feel your pain. For anyone who did not get cut: START LOOKING NOW! I was booted after 25 yrs and rated “1” in most of them. Missed family events, etc for the “good of the company” and gave it my all like you all do. My role was in cloud architecture and container orchestration. All skills AK says are needed but apparently not if you are a US based employee. I was not worried about the RA and landing a new role based on my skillset and experience, However, reality quickly struck as no one outside of IBM uses IBM products. All that cloud experience amounted to 0 as hiring managers only want experience with “the big three”. I was often told, “Thanks, but you’ve been in an IBM bubble too long”. Fortunately, I was able to land a role working on AWS. It would have been much easier had I spent more time preparing to leave Big Blue and upskilled on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud. Word of advice: don’t plan on being able to keep ducking the RA Axe. It will eventually find you. Instead, plan your own exit. Train on relevant products. Look for new opportunities. If/when the next axe falls, at least you’ll be ready. Good luck and when you do get out, you’ll wonder why you stayed and sacrificed for so long for a company that never cared about you.

I was lucky enough to retire on my own terms at 65 1/2. I am sad to hear how things are getting worse at IBM. I was made an offer to rejoin but a 2 levels below the band level I left at. Some edict executives made for the markets where hires/rehires at to be at band 7 or less. Many talented people have left and IBM thinks the young people fresh out of college or other training or candidates in India is their solution to fill gaps left by the experienced talent that left.

Been in IBM approx 15 yrs. Since Alvind became CEO the RAs have become more sinister in their tactics. The teams have been filled with incompetent workers from specific regions (DEI LIVES) who just fill calendars with meetings about meetings and add no value to a mans working day. I would love to be RA'd at this stage. Given enough time in this toxic ship that I want to be paid off. Based in EU so I think the severance is a little better than US. This company is sinking and the flipflopper Krishna has got the wheel

I have almost 10 years here. Sure there were RAs under GR and she was incompetent but there’s something about Alvinds personality that irks me

Look I know CEOs aren’t supposed to be your best friend but read the damn room Alvind ! Specifically on your office hours meetings ! You don’t have to be so confrontational all the time !

And Krabanaugh! How about people focusing on their jobs instead of people needing to learn 10,000 new skill for them to get a stupid badge and use products that nobody outside IBM Wants, They’re not reaping the benefits ! You are !!

I’ve been called so many times on vacation it got me into unnecessary arguments with my wife over that. With this company everything’s an emergency to he-l with your personal life is their creed

Yesterday was my limit when I was at a funeral and they knew I was going to be offline and still they couldn’t at least wait until the afternoon

The days of working at least 12 hours are gone. No more!! I’m not going to be lazy but I’m not going to work myself to death so management can say good job but we need more

Alvind and his Pipmunks are getting fat d-mb and happy from thousands of Americans who are producing while they get fatter

@bw Yep, this.
My work ethic won't allow me not to give my best but I'm not doing anymore 12-14 hour days and picking up the phone at 9pm or pushing my vacay because of some fabricated deadline. All for what? An insulting GDP and being told there is no money for raises? All while our fearless leader helps himself to a 25% one. This is the most toxic company I have every worked for. And that's saying a lot!

Bloodbath it T&O and my manager dumps work on everyone while he can’t write 1 line of code

No more late nights. I’m not doing it. I’m not slacking off but I’m not going to figuratively work myself to de@th
