I finally got out of GOSC, which is run by Mr. Walmart and his muscle man Mr. Dr Pepper. Two wonderful examples of Geoff hiring from the outside!

How do people with MBAs whose experience was running a sugar water company and one who ran managed diapers and toilet paper be able to run global operations for complex Medical device company?

Every year they waste huge sums of money on “programmatic savings” programs and don’t understand the true ROI picture. If they are saving so much money why is the EPS been declining for the past 3 years???

They tried reducing inventory to reduce the burden on the books, but then we can’t even meet small increase in field demand because we don’t have inventory to manufacture. Then people are punished with their MIP bonus because the sites burden goes up because we can’t build product with no inventory!!!!!

OIP is paid quarterly because it’s damn near impossible to retain DL for a period longer than that. It was done quarterly as a retention tool.

when did it start? Geoff started this with the op model, then when GS came in to relieve NC of ops, things really started to unravel. were up to what, 6 major ops reorgs since then? you just cant run a huge med device company like a discount retailer!!

GOSC doesn't get quarterly MIP. Supervisor and below, so mostly hourly employees, get OIP (operations incentive plan) quarterly while everyone else still gets MIP. But OIP isn't a great incentive like it sounds. The targets are unilaterally increased and are sold to DL employees as a way to make them work harder and more efficiently. It sounds good at a surface level but in the end it isn't, it instead punishes the hourly labor for things out of their control while only giving them pennies in their pockets for truly great performance. On top of it, they are rated on site performance. So the DL population could out perform their goals, but if they don't meet the site goals unilaterally dictated (which most of they can't even affect) then they get 2s as an average for their ratings.

It’s when our CEO let Mr. Walmart have full autonomous control with no oversight, absorbing as much control as possible (GOSC makes up 60% of the company) and one guy is tanking it all. Did you all know that GOSC folks get quarterly MIPs while the rest of the Org gets the scraps at the end of the fiscal year? GOSC only looking out for themselves, the greed is crazy.

I have multiple master's degrees largely revolving around the rigorous study of biomedical engineering, FDA regulations, mechanical engineering, and software engineering. I've done research with radiologists, surgeons, primary care physicians, and clinical epidemiologists. Most recently, I studied AI with a biomedical imaging expert who has many patents and publications in that field. I know how to code in PyTorch for applying AI algorithms to detect tuberculosis in medical images.

But my job at Medtronic got sent overseas. Meanwhile, how is it that such executives noted above are running the company? Go figure.

It's a pattern I've seen many times in the medical device industry. It's very common for biomedical engineers to be overlooked or disregarded despite their specific training in that niche. The rare counterexample was Stryker. I saw their lab which hired biomedical engineers with PhDs. However, in the long run, for Medtronic the opportunity cost of ignoring such trained workers is very high. It's a private "economic" utility gone to waste from the purview of health economics. I feel like I have to word it that way for those MBAs.
