Security 101 - Embarrassing

We were subjected to a Security 101 training today. This is why our competition is kicking out butt in security. They get training that is deep to handle those security conversations. We get what is a firewall. What is NAC. What is zero trust. What is MFA. This was throwing every 101 security. We all know the basics. Give us something more relevant. This was awful today.

Face it everyone cisco is a BS company with BS jobs that is there to churn out BS. You heard it here first.

I lived it there decades ago. Did you ever read posts on this site?

If only everyone did know the basics. But they don’t. It’s all C and D players now.

My RM got feedback from peer RMs in our operation and not one single person got anything of value from this 101. We are technology professionals and know these basics but security folks misread the room.

Next week’s 201 is going to start off like … if you recall last week, we discussed what is a firewall, this week in our 201, we are going to show you what a firewall looks like.

Next is a mandatory CCNP Security Certification within six months, or out the door.

This is a serious stuff, and your job depends on it. Cisco is a Networking and a Security Company. Don’t sweat the small stuff.

It was insulting. The castle analogy is for my child. This does not help me sell more security.

It was a waste of time. There was nothing new from it. High level stuff that I have already heard from my security team. My security PSS does a much better job than what we heard today.

We all know the basics.

I worked there for over a decade any on so many necessary topics for the jobs at hand the majority did not know the basics even after (sometimes repeated) training.

There are small pockets where Cisco has passionate people doing world class work but most only want a paycheck without being too bothered, and given the kinds of bugs coming from what are supposed to far more modern and aggressive companies like Apple and Google this is not unique to Cisco.

I asked my security ae about firewall mesh and I was told it is not real and the speaker on the training is clueless cause we can’t sell it.
