Thread regarding 3M layoffs

3M Work Environment

Leadership engages in favoritism, lack of communication and incompetent practices in a climate of fear. Promotions based on favoritism not merit. Layoffs are random. HR will not respond to your issues, don't even bother complaining. I expressed my concerns and now I am the perceived problem. Ethics line does not work either as their investigation will be done with 3M HR that is assigned to investigations dept. They will tell you the investigaters are independent, that is a lie.

We all are floating in this toxic environment, low morale, lack of career growth and disengagement. High turnover and no hope. Benefits being shaved away every quarter. Maybe I will be job eliminated. That would be the best.

This use to be a company where when you were hired, it was the greatest accomplishment. Now the greatest accomplishment is escaping. The best is yet to come. I am now recording leadership as it is the only proof of what is happening, Audio Recorder on personal cell. Yes.

I could've written this myself. I am no longer at 3M luckily, I escaped a little over a year ago. I left BECAUSE of a narcissist manager and her equally narcissistic flying monkey. Went to my director first and then to HR and the I was the one who go ended up getting written up. I really loved the work I did for 3M and the majority of the people I worked with, but my supervisor made my life a living he-l there. It seems like management there was filled with narcissists. People quit managers, not jobs.

Also the performance reviews are a joke. it really all depends on how much your supervisor likes/dislikes you. I literally checked multiple boxes in several pay grades above mine but was never given more than exceeds expectations - but then when I started performing at my pay grade level and no longer did above and beyond BS, I was told my performance was hurting. Get yo sh*t together 3M ! You could be so much better if you didn't let management get away with such bullcr-p!

The 3M HR layoff moment lasts all of a second, but the memory lives on forever.
After a cancelled coworker or family member you love becomes a memory, that memory becomes a treasure.

3M HR brings tears, smiles, and memories.
The tears dry, the smiles fade, but the memories last forever.

Is HR the reason 3M is so bad at managing people?

3M HR automated layoffs are always funny until someone's family gets hurt.
Then it's just hilarious.

The OP summed up everything I have seen while at 3M. The only thing I would add to the leadership behaviors listed is gaslighting. Most companies do not allow this type of behavior in senior leadership but at 3M it is part of the leadership culture.

Do what you need to do for a company that values you. Move on, you will feel so much better for it.

The only thing good about my job is the chair swivels.

HR is your enemy. Don't ever go to HR with any ethics complaints especially if the person harassing you is your boss. HR will gaslight you, blame you and always protect the company and its reputation. Sadly, there is nothing you can do about it.

The best advice I can give is to leave the company.

I have to agree with you 3M HR and 3M Ethics reporting is a sad disgraceful joke.
I've learned it's time to go straight to the EEOC to file a complaint...better? Perhaps not...but at least it gives the illusion of someone giving a dam.

Managers harassment is over the top out of control.

3Ms HR was one of the most positive and supportive groups in the 1980s and 90s. Mostly embodied the McKnight principles. What changed?

James McNerney brought in GE style "leadership" that decimated morale and benefits, imposed a pernicious forced ranking system, and smothered the 15 percent rule with Sick Sigma.

That was 25 years ago. The company has never been the same and now with BB Minnesota Nasty is soup du jour. Translation: 3M is going from bad to worse to terrible. Just hope for a package.

You sound like you've learned a valuable lesson. HR's role is protection of the company from lawsuits. They do not represent the employee but the employer.
