Thread regarding Illumina Inc. layoffs

My two cents on illumina as LONGTIME employee

I have been an Illumina employee for a LONG time. I have never considered leaving Illumina until now. I truly believe the “soul” has been su-ked out of this company. It is not what it once was. I have found myself asking more than once over the last few years if this was the beginning of the end. Management continues to take take take all while demanding more more more. The level of talent that has left this company is truly staggering. I fear even more will soon follow.

As we know the next steps will be this useless Power of I survey that they will want to hear our feedback. As someone who has been here for MANY years this exercise is pointless and futile. It only serves management as saying we are listening to you. We hear your concerns. This will be immediately followed by follow up meeting to discuss and clarify the results. I suggest a new approach. When the inevitable survey comes along NO ONE fills it out. We show the same ambivalence they show us back to them. I believe this will send a stronger message than a strongly worded response on a useless survey. They love to tout the engagement numbers let’s at least take that from them. I for one will no longer fill out any surveys for any management group as they are useless. Just my two cents. Hope others will follow.

Yes, please leave. Lots of better talent out there willing and ready to make this a better company than you left it.

There will be an iPulse survey. It’s been done for too many years to stop it now. And avoiding it essentially would be exec mgt admitting defeat and a total loss of the hearts and minds (which might actually be the case, but Jacob and team will not publicly acknowledge it by punting entirely on the survey). IMO, it’s better to respond to the survey with scathing feedback than to boycott it. Even if the execs don’t respond meaningfully, it will leave an abhorrent baseline indelibly in the results that will serve as a reminder and hopefully a motivator going forward.

In defense of management generally on the iPulse topic, I used to work for ILMN and was often in the behind-doors leadership discussions about the survey results and ways to take constructive action to drive improvements. It of course didn’t always translate fully to the ground level in a noticeable or sustainable way. But most of the C suite and VPs did take it seriously and expressed genuine care. Of course, that was under an entirely different leadership team… Jay, Christian, Tristan, Omead, Marc, MvO… those guys did care, and they were the reason Illumina became so great. FdS forced them out for his own vanity and ego-fragility and crippled the company in the process. He was busy creating a Lord of the Flies culture, and inflating his external profile, while the innovation engine sputtered, and the company lost ground that it’s now struggling to make up (perhaps futilely).

I wish the best of luck to everyone still at ILMN. Hopefully it will turn around eventually. There are still some amazing people there.

Our management/org hasn’t reviewed, addressed, or even expressed willingness to discuss the last two ipulse surveys

I would be very surprised if there’s even an iPulse. They don’t seem to care about employee feedback. And even if they did have it, the report out will be so sterile and favorable to leaders that it’ll be useless.
