Florida-based defense contractor L3Harris Technologies is laying off 179 employees who report to the company’s Rockwall facility, according to a WARN notice sent to the Texas Workforce Commission Feb. 20.
The layoffs, per the notice, will occur between April 22 and June 30 and are the result of a decision to “permanently reduce” the workforce of its JAVA MAN program, an aerial intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance program.
The program is the subject two U.S. Air Force contracts collectively worth $75 million through the year, according to HigherGov. More than 1 million program flight hours have been logged with a 35-aircraft fleet that flies up to 65 missions a day, according to a company document.
The notice states that the “vast majority” of affected employees reside out of state and work remotely overseas. Positions affected include various logistics and maintenance positions, as well as 51 pilots.
The JAVA MAN program was previously targeted for layoffs in October 2023, when L3Harris laid off 268 workers.
L3Harris, which employs about 48,000 people globally, operates 15 locations in Texas as of July 2021. The locations collectively employ around 7,900 workers with an average salary of over $100,000.
