Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Red tape drains the energy

After five years here, the endless red tape has become unbearable. Formalities turn simple tasks into uphill battles. I’m all for structure, but this level of red tape feels like a straightjacket. I’ve worked in strict environments before, but nothing comes close to the overcomplicated mess they’ve built here.

This will continue, as ExxonMobil does not reward competency anymore.

The MOC process is a good thing when staffed correctly with knowledgeable and experienced personnel. My last few years however I noticed that folks were placed in management positions that had no business being there. The incompetence was characterized by insane ideas and activities created in order to get them to sign off because they didn’t have the knowledge necessary to make approval decisions. This resulted in a lot more work than should have been required.

I had one instance whereby an operator was placed in a position of power and single handedly cost the company over 2 Million dollars of new hardware on a project that the unit did not need. She was so hostile that no one could talk to her sensibly and she knew that she could throw the team player card on anyone that tried to educate her on why the unit didn’t need it.

It’s a sad day to see what the company has become

It’s the heritage XOM people wanting everyone to do what they had to do on an offshore platform. They aren’t smart enough to understand it’s a completely different work environment.

My sense is that this was manageable 20 years ago, but with all the headcount reduction and loss of experienced personnel (accelerated by 2020), what we are left with is overburdening on those that remain and no one knows how or why we are supposed to do alot of this.
