Cisco ELT (Executive Leadership Team) simply drank their own AI-tainted Kool-aid.
They used ChatGPT, got excited, and extrapolated the perceived benefits into personal gain. They are still doing this. "AI Pods" and "AI Networking" have given way to the latest buzzword: "AI Agents" or, if they want to sound super smart "Agentic AI". There is also the tragic "AI Defense" announcement that is an "everything to everybody" solution that Cisco partners and account managers are thoroughly confused about.
None of these technologies are providing sustainable revenue, nor will they. They are being used as excuses to reduce headcount which makes the fundamental flaws in generative AI even more destructive because now the people who could have mitigated the risk and damage are gone. Splunk was a $28 Billion Dollar mistake. The over-rotation into AI is proving to be even more costly. Everyone (yes, EVERYONE) is pulling back their AI spending. AI Winter is coming.
Apple is dropping AI because of the disaster News bungling which is endemic to AI LLMs. Cruise, Waymo and all the driverless car companies are throwing in the towel because the technology is A) ki-ling people and B) does not work. Tesla FSD (Full Self Driving) promise of 'coming next year' is going on it's 13th year! Seriously? AI solutions to white collar problems are just creating more problems. LLMs need a lot of (very expensive) TLC.
but let's assume the AI train keeps rolling. What then?
Cisco is pushing Ethernet as the savior for AI workloads but Nvidia is calling the shots. HyperFabric, The combo of Cisco networking and Nvidia GPUs & software is a complete bust. Nvidia InfiniBand is a direct threat to Cisco's core, Ethernet Switching. Nvidia's direct competition with Cisco, however, is Spectrum-X Ethernet networking. A product that they designed and optimized for AI from the ground up. Nvidia's Spectrum-4 switch, BlueField-3 DPU, and software stack is selling like hotcakes! The ELT pushes a ridiculous narrative about the Cisco and Nvidia partnership.
The February layoffs will probably be brutal AF.
